Explore the origins, legendary healing acts, spiritual significance and inspiring legacy of the Ashwini Kumaras in Vedic tradition
The Ashwini Kumaras are revered twin deities from the Vedic era, honored as the healers, givers of life and restorers among the divine. Their presence is celebrated throughout the Vedas, Puranas and the Mahabharata, always with deep respect and devotion. As the presiding deities of Ashwini Nakshatra, their qualities and energy are reflected in those born under this star.
The Ashwini Kumaras were born to Surya (the Sun) and his wife Sanjna (also known as Saranyu). According to one legend, Surya and Sanjna assumed the forms of a horse and mare and from their union, these twin brothers were born. This is why they are called Ashwin, meaning "like a horse."
The two brothers are named Nasatya and Dasra. In the Vedas, they are also referred to as "Divonapata" (sons of heaven) and "Abdijan" (born in the ocean).
They are always depicted as youthful, attractive, clad in golden armor and bearing the head of a horse. Their chariot, golden and three-wheeled, drawn by birds or horses, is said to appear in the sky at dawn.
Symbol | Meaning and Significance |
---|---|
Horse’s Head | Motion, strength, energy, new beginnings |
Golden Armor | Divinity, protection, immortality |
Three-wheeled Chariot | The three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas), the three planes of life |
Heralds of Dawn | Movement from darkness to light, from illness to health |
Honey/Soma | Nectar, life force, health |
Chanting Vedic mantras dedicated to the Ashwini Kumaras is considered especially beneficial for removing illness, adversity and mental stress. Reciting "Om Ashwini Kumarabhyam Namah" or "Om Ashwinikumaraaya Namah" is believed to enhance the power of healing, especially before any treatment or therapy.
The Ashwini Kumaras are not only divine healers of the Vedic tradition but also a source of inspiration for anyone seeking to move forward in life with energy, renewal, courage and a spirit of service. As the presiding deities of Ashwini Nakshatra, they ignite the spark of renewal, healing, movement and positivity in every individual born under their star. Their story teaches us that after every darkness, there is a new dawn, after every illness, there is health and after every challenge, there is renewal.
