The tale of Aditi and the Vasus is not just mythological but a symbol of recurring prosperity and hope in life.
In Vedic and Puranic literature, Aditi is worshipped as "Mother of the Gods," "Infinite Sky," and "Creator of All Existence." Among her children, the most fascinating and mysterious group is the "Ashta Vasus" - eight deities who represent the fundamental elements of nature, wealth, light and prosperity. The tale of the Ashta Vasus and their connection to Aditi carries not just mythological but deep philosophical and astrological meanings.
The Ashta Vasus are the eight deities regarded as the representatives of the essential elements of nature and cosmic forces in the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana and Mahabharata. According to the Ramayana and Mahabharata, the Ashta Vasus are the children of Aditi and the sage Kashyapa. Aditi is referred to as "Aditi" (meaning "Boundless" or "Unconstrained")-the mother of every life, every element and every energy.
Vasu Name | Element/Symbol | Meaning/Significance |
---|---|---|
Apah | Water | Life, purification, flow |
Dhruva | Pole Star/ Stability | Steadiness, Center of the Universe |
Som | Moon | Coolness, Amrit, Mind |
Dhara | Earth | Foundation, nourishment, stability |
Anila | Wind | Vitality, movement, life |
Anala | Fire | Energy, heat, transformation |
Pritvyush | Sun/Light | Awakening, light, consciousness |
Prabhas | Sky/Glory | Expansion, radiance, cosmic light |
In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and the Mahabharata, there is slight variation in the names of these Vasus but their essence remains the same.
Meaning of Vasu: Wealth, Light, Prosperity
The literal meaning of "Vasu" is wealth, property, light and prosperity. These deities channel the prosperity, energy and goodness of the cosmos through the eight elements of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Sky, Sun, Moon and Stars. The Vasus are also known as the "wealth givers," or those who bestow prosperity and light. Aditi, as the mother of the Vasus, grants the universe every living being, matter and energy with the powers of nourishment, protection and renewal.
Punavarsu Nakshatra means "Again Vasu," which implies the returning of light, prosperity and goodness in life.
Whenever darkness, hardship or loss occurs, the energy of Punavarsu Nakshatra, like the Vasus, brings back light, energy and goodness.
Together, the motherhood of Aditi and the powers of the Vasus convey the message of "renewal," "hope," and "new beginnings" that happen again and again in life.
According to the Mahabharata, once the Ashta Vasus, along with their wives, were wandering in the forest. When the wife of Prabhas saw the Kamadhenu cow of Sage Vasishta, she desired to possess it. Prabhas and the other Vasus stole the cow. Vasishta, with his yogic power, cursed the Vasus that they would be born as humans. The Vasus prayed to Ganga to become their mother. Ganga married Shantanu and submerged seven of the Vasus in her waters immediately after their birth, thus freeing them. The eighth Vasu, Prabhas, remained on Earth as Bhishma.
