The divine story of Brahma emerging from Vishnu’s navel and the start of creation
In Indian spirituality and scriptures, Brahma is recognized as the creator of the universe. In the Vishnu Purana, the origin of Brahma is linked to the divine lotus that emanated from the navel of Lord Vishnu. This perspective sees Vishnu as the ultimate foundation of the universe and Brahma as the executive creator of creation. This story not only explains the origin of creation but also uncovers the deeper spiritual and philosophical aspects of the cosmos.
According to the Vishnu Purana, when the universe began, the entire world was submerged in an endless, dark ocean of Pralaya (cosmic dissolution). Lord Vishnu was lying in Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) on the serpent Ananta in the middle of the ocean. From Vishnu’s navel, a divine, supernatural lotus flower appeared. From this lotus, Brahma was born and was established as the creator of the universe. This lotus not only symbolizes the beginning of creation but also serves as the source of life, consciousness and the energy of creation. Brahma, in turn, used this energy to create the universe, including all living beings, gods, humans and the elements of nature.
In this view, Lord Vishnu is seen as the ultimate foundation of creation. He is the sustainer and protector of the universe. The lotus that arose from his navel became the birthplace of Brahma, signifying that the creation and expansion of the universe are made possible by Vishnu’s divine energy.
The story of Brahma’s origin in the Vishnu Purana is an important medium to understand the mysteries of creation in both Vedic and Puranic literature.
The story of Brahma’s origin in the Vishnu Purana not only represents the physical origin of the universe but also unveils the profound mysteries of the cosmos, divinity, consciousness and energy. The birth of Brahma from the lotus emanating from Vishnu’s navel signifies that the foundation of creation is rooted in the supreme divinity and consciousness and Brahma performs creation through that consciousness. This narrative is helpful in understanding the deep connection between creation, energy and consciousness in Indian philosophy and spirituality.
