Discover how the kundali and twelve houses reveal personality, planetary influences, yogas, and predictions through the ancient science of Vedic astrology
In Vedic astrology, the kundali is regarded as a celestial map of one’s life at the very moment of birth. When a child enters this world, the exact configuration of planets and nakshatras in the sky is charted mathematically and presented as a kundali. This chart is the result of precise Vedic calculations, astronomical understanding, and deep astrologer’s experience.
A kundali is far more than a tool for predictions. It serves as a comprehensive guide that reveals clues about health, nature, relationships, career, marriage, progeny, spiritual tendencies, and even the end of life.
A kundali is an astrological chart prepared using the date, exact time, and place of birth. The sky is divided into twelve equal sections called “bhavas” or houses, with each representing a unique facet of existence - such as health, wealth, learning, relationships, profession, or marriage.
All planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) and the twelve zodiac signs (from Aries to Pisces) are positioned in these houses as per their actual astronomical placement at the time of birth.
To create a kundali, three fundamental pieces of information are required:
With this data, the positions of planets and signs are determined as they appeared in the sky at that moment. The very first house is called the “lagna” or ascendant - the zodiac sign that was rising in the eastern sky at the time of birth. For instance, if Leo was ascending, Leo forms the first house, followed by Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and so on, sequentially occupying the remaining houses.
An ephemeris is used to ascertain the precise planetary positions for any given date, which are then mapped into their respective signs and houses in the chart.
The most fundamental tool in creating a kundali is the panchang, the traditional Vedic calendar and calculation system. The panchang offers a detailed astronomical and temporal analysis necessary for accurate horoscope casting.
It is upon these five pillars that an authentic Vedic kundali is prepared.
The twelve zodiac signs divide the celestial belt into twelve parts of thirty degrees each. At birth, starting from the eastern horizon, these zodiac signs are placed in the twelve houses in a particular order.

When examining a kundali, an experienced astrologer focuses on:
The ascendant sign at the moment of birth forms the basis of the entire kundali. This determines the placement of all twelve signs in the twelve houses. For example, if Leo rises in the east, it becomes the first house followed by Virgo in the second, and so on. Planets are placed according to their positions determined by ephemeris or reliable astrology software.
Each of the nine planets governs a central aspect in the horoscope:
A kundali is not just a diagram; it is a profound Vedic science for recognizing one’s nature, potential, limitations, and possibilities. When understood and interpreted correctly, it provides true direction amid life’s complexities.
For these reasons, ensure your kundali is always prepared and read by a knowledgeable, experienced astrologer with deep roots in the Vedic tradition.
