In the Hindu Vedic tradition, marriage is more than a social contract-it is a sacred sacrament. For this reason, matching the horoscopes of the couple before marriage is considered essential. In Vedic astrology, the Ashtakoota matching system includes eight types of compatibility checks, with Nadi Koota being the last and most significant (carrying 8 points). Nadi primarily relates to the physical, mental and reproductive harmony between partners. If Nadi Dosh is present, it can affect the couple’s health, happiness with children and marital stability.

What Is Nadi Dosh?

In horoscope matching, eight aspects are evaluated: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Nadi receives the highest weight of 8 points. The three types of Nadi are:

• Adi Nadi (Vata-dominated)
• Madhya Nadi (Pitta-dominated)
• Antya Nadi (Kapha-dominated)

When both the bride and groom share the same Nadi-be it Adi, Madhya or Antya-it is considered Nadi Dosh.

Impact of Nadi Dosh on Married Life

According to astrological texts and the Narada Purana, Nadi Dosh can lead to several issues:

• Health Problems: Adverse health effects on either or both spouses.

• Untimely Death: In severe cases, one partner may face premature death.

When Is Nadi Dosh Not Considered Effective?

• Acts such as donating cows (go-daan), gold or grains are considered very auspicious
• On wedding anniversaries, one should donate grains equal to one’s weight and offer meals and clothing to Brahmins

3. Rituals Performed with Intention

• The couple should take a collective vow and perform special rituals like Rudrabhishek, Navagraha Shanti or Nadi Dosh Nivaran Yajna.

It is unwise to dismiss Nadi Dosh as a mere technicality in astrology.
