Explore the date, mythological story, chariot process and astrological meaning of the grand Rath Yatra
The Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the grandest, oldest and most spiritually significant festivals in India, celebrated annually in the city of Puri, Odisha, on the second day of the Shukla Paksha of the Ashadha month. This yatra is not only a symbol of religious faith but also an extraordinary convergence of cultural unity, devotion and the path to liberation (moksha). In 2025, the yatra will begin on June 27 and end on July 5, with millions of devotees participating from across the country and around the world.
The Jagannath Temple in Puri is one of the Char Dhams of Hinduism and is also referred to as the “Vishnu’s abode on earth.” During the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra ride on three grand wooden chariots from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple (Mausi Maa’s Temple). This journey symbolizes the soul’s progression toward its ultimate goal - moksha. It is believed that participating in the yatra, touching the chariot or pulling the ropes removes one’s sins and grants happiness, peace, prosperity and liberation.
The story behind the Rath Yatra is both inspiring and profound. It is said that once, Lord Krishna’s sister Subhadra wished to visit the city of Puri. In response to her desire, Lord Jagannath (Krishna) and Balabhadra seated her on the chariot and took her for a tour of the city. This event is commemorated annually through the Rath Yatra. This story is mentioned in several scriptures, including the Narada Purana, Padma Purana and Skanda Purana.
Another version of the story tells that King Indradyumna of Puri discovered a divine piece of wood on the seashore. With the help of Lord Vishwakarma, the statues of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra were carved. The carving of the statues was incomplete but an aakashvani (divine voice) declared that Lord Jagannath wanted to remain in this form. Since then, the tradition of installing these wooden idols and performing the Rath Yatra has been followed.
In Vedic astrology, the Ekadashi tithi, connected with the moon, symbolizes auspiciousness, enthusiasm and social harmony. During the Rath Yatra, the planetary positions, especially the sun and moon’s alignment, are considered particularly favorable for spiritual upliftment, mental peace and liberation from Pitra doshas (ancestral afflictions). Participating in the yatra or touching the chariot is believed to neutralize the malefic effects of the planets and brings positivity into one’s life.
The Jagannath Rath Yatra is not just a religious festival but a symbol of Lord Vishnu’s compassion, equality and universal welfare. It shows that God comes among His devotees, sees them all equally and does not differentiate between castes, classes or religions. This yatra sends a powerful message of devotion, service, surrender and social unity.
Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 is a festival of spirituality, devotion and cultural pride. This yatra not only paves the way to moksha but also fills life with hope, faith and positivity. By participating in the Rath Yatra, engaging in service, donations and devotion, one can purify and sanctify their life. Celebrate this festival with devotion, dedicating yourself to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra - this is the true path to peace and success in life.
