Auspicious Observance of Lakshmi, Dhanvantari and Kubera
Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi, signals the grand opening of the five-day Diwali festival. Falling on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month, it represents a synthesis of prosperity, sacred tradition and vibrant social togetherness. In 2025, Dhanteras will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18, 2025, inspiring renewal, gratitude and hope across households.
All auspicious acts, buying metals, commencing new ventures, lighting Diyas, ritual baths and donations, are ideally performed within this span.
Dhanteras preparations start days ahead. Homes are carefully cleansed of clutter and negativity. Afterwards, vibrant rangolis, threshold talismans (auspicious symbols) and intricate patterns adorn entrances and interior courtyards. Electric lights and traditional clay lamps (diyas) are arranged everywhere, symbolizing the welcoming of knowledge and fortune and the expulsion of gloom and ignorance.
On Dhanteras evening, families light thirteen sesame oil diyas, one for each lunar day so far. The Yama Deepam, illuminated in the southwest (Yama’s direction), invokes Yama, the god of death, ensuring long life, protection from untimely mishaps and spiritual safety for all household members. Diya arrangements visually and energetically reinforce the boundaries of family well-being.
The act of buying gold, silver, brass, copper or even stainless steel utensils on Dhanteras is not just an economic practice but a spiritual statement that wealth and abundance are welcome to enter and flourish. Even symbolic purchases bring continuity of fortune. Gifting these items among family and friends further extends the festival’s blessings.
Lighting the Yama Deepam in the southwest outside of homes is a form of appeasing Yama. It safeguards loved ones from unforeseen dangers and bad luck, in essence, creating a ring of protection through light and intention.
Some devotees maintain a daylight fast or eat only pure, light meals. Ritual purity and clarity are sought through scriptural recitation, meditative contemplation upon divine forms and heartfelt prayers for health, success and peace.
One of Dhanteras’ most cherished expressions is the evening puja with the entire family present. Afterwards, sweets, fruits and homemade treats are shared, enhancing unity, emotional bonds and gratitude for each other’s presence and support.
Dhanteras extends beyond the acquisition of wealth. It nurtures well-being, joy, gratitude and harmony. The day encourages reflection on generosity, stewardship and mindful nurturing of resources, both spiritual and material. It is the anchor for the entire Diwali festival, infusing all successive days with samriddhi (prosperity), suraksha (protection) and shuddhi (purification).
October 18, 2025 brings Dhanteras, a festival of light, legacy and spiritual calling. Puja during the designated evening muhurat, ceremonial diya lighting, mindful purchases and collective joy together consecrate the home and soul, setting a golden foundation for the year ahead with health, happiness and unbroken divine grace.
