According to tradition, immersion must be done during Pratahkal (morning) or Aparahna (afternoon) while Dashami Tithi is in effect, with particular auspiciousness when Dashami coincides with Shravana Nakshatra.
At dawn, the final worship is conducted. Devotees offer flowers, fruits, sweets and coconuts to the goddess for one last time amidst the chants of mantras. This is an expression of gratitude for her presence and blessings during Navratri.
Prominently celebrated in Bengal, this custom involves married women applying vermillion both to the goddess’s idol and to one another. This joyous community ritual symbolizes marital bliss, feminine power and mutual prosperity, while affirming the celebratory strength of womanhood.
Following the offerings, an aarti is performed with lit lamps revolving before the idol as chants of Durga hymns fill the air. The devotional resonance binds the community together in collective faith.
The idol, adorned beautifully, is carried out in a grand procession with drums, music, dancing and chanting. Devotees express their devotion with “Maa Durga” chants, walking to the riverbank filled with faith and energy.
The climactic ritual is immersion, when the clay idol is slowly lowered into a river or sea. It signifies the cycle of creation, dissolution and renewal while symbolizing the goddess’s return to her celestial realm on Mount Kailash.
Durga Visarjan embodies humility, surrender and renewal. While the clay idol merges with water, devotees are reminded that divine power is eternal and formless. The ritual assures that although departure brings longing, the goddess’s blessings endure and she will return each year renewed.
Durga Visarjan 2025 inspires hope, resilience and devotion, urging devotees to carry courage, strength and wisdom into their lives until Maa Durga once again returns to bless her followers.
