This year Mokshda Ekadashi of Margashirsha Shukla Paksha will be observed on Monday December 1 based on the sunrise tithi

Mokshda Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight in the month of Margashirsha and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is believed to bless devotees with spiritual upliftment and also help departed ancestors who have not yet attained liberation. In 2025 many devotees asked whether the fast should be kept on November 30 or December 1.
The deciding rule is that Ekadashi vrat is observed on the sunrise tithi. In 2025 the Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi tithi begins at 9:29 PM on November 30 and ends at 7:01 PM on December 1. Since sunrise on November 30 falls on Dashami and sunrise on December 1 falls on Ekadashi, Mokshda Ekadashi will be observed on Monday, 1 December 2025.
The fast is broken on the next day during Dwadasi
Within this interval one should bathe, worship Vishnu, make a simple offering and then gently break the fast with fruits or light food.
Mokshda Ekadashi is praised as a day that can reduce the weight of past misdeeds and assist ancestors in gaining higher realms. Traditional stories describe a king who relieved his father’s suffering in the afterlife by observing this Ekadashi and dedicating its merit to him. For this reason it is considered especially effective for both personal purification and pitru shanti.
The day is also celebrated as Gita Jayanti in many traditions, as it is believed that Lord Krishna revealed the Bhagavad Gita on a Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi. Reciting or listening to the Gita on this day is considered very auspicious.
These windows are considered especially favourable for meditation, japa, Gita recitation and formal worship of Lord Vishnu.
1. Why is the fast not kept on November 30 in 2025
Because on November 30 the Ekadashi tithi starts only late at night and sunrise is on Dashami. The vrat must align with the sunrise tithi, which is Ekadashi on December 1, so that is the correct fasting day.
2. Is it okay to begin food restraint from the night of November 30
Yes, someone may start eating lightly or avoiding grains from that night if they wish but the main vow, worship and day of Ekadashi should be centered on December 1, when the udaya tithi is actually Ekadashi.
3. Is Mokshda Ekadashi mainly for ancestors or also for personal growth
It is for both. The fast can be offered for pitru shanti, yet it also helps the practitioner by purifying the mind, increasing devotion and reducing the hold of old negative tendencies.
4. How should people with health issues observe this Ekadashi
Those who are ill, elderly or on medication can follow a light form of fasting, such as fruits, milk or simple non grain foods. The purpose is devotion and discipline, not harming the body, so one should adjust according to medical advice.
5. What is most important to remember about paran on December 2
Paran should be done in Dwadasi after sunrise and without delaying too long. One should bathe first, worship Vishnu, preferably give a small charity and then break the fast calmly with a modest quantity of food rather than overeating in haste.
