From Maharashtra to Odisha, each state enriches Ganesh Chaturthi with unique traditions
Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 will be celebrated on Wednesday, 27 August 2025 across India. The arrival of Lord Ganesha, remover of obstacles, is not only a spiritual celebration but also a cultural and social event that unites communities. Each region adds its own unique flavor to the festivities, making it a reflection of India’s rich diversity.
The grandest celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi can be seen in Maharashtra. Mumbai’s Lalbaugcha Raja and Pune’s Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati draw millions of devotees. Long queues, devotional music, cultural programs and evening aarti define the festive mood. The Visarjan processions, filled with chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya, create unforgettable spiritual energy.
In Goa, Ganesh Chaturthi is called Chavath. Families prepare clay idols, decorate them with banana and betel leaves and offer sweets like neuri and modak. The centerpiece of the festival is the Matoli canopy, decorated with seasonal fruits and herbs, honoring the gifts of nature.
Known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, the festival thrives in Karnataka with folk dances, devotional music and the special Patra Puja, where 21 types of leaves are worshipped. Traditional sweets like groundnut laddoos and karigadubu add sweetness to the celebrations, keeping folk traditions alive.
Cities like Hyderabad and Vijayawada display massive themed idols. The Vinayaka Nimajjanam is the highlight, where idols are carried in dazzling processions and the immersion at Hussain Sagar Lake becomes an iconic spiritual sight.
Tamil Nadu celebrates the festival in a serene and devotional way. Clay idols are adorned with flowers, kozhukattai (a type of modak) is offered and family rituals highlight devotion over grandeur. The celebrations are intimate and soulful.
Although Durga Puja dominates Bengal, Ganesh Chaturthi is gaining popularity. Many homes worship Ganesha with Goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing wisdom and prosperity. The idols reflect Bengal’s artistic excellence with intricate detailing.
Community pandals are the heart of Gujarat’s Ganesh Chaturthi. Bhajans, folk dances and plays bring people together. Motichoor laddoos are offered to Ganesha, while the immersions are marked with music and colorful processions.
In Odisha, schools and colleges organize Ganesh Puja, where students seek blessings for wisdom and success. This makes the festival vibrant, youthful and closely connected with education.
It falls on Wednesday, 27 August 2025.
