According to belief, Maa Brahmacharini in her previous birth was Sati, daughter of King Daksha and wife of Lord Shiva. Saddened by her father's insult of Shiva, she sacrificed herself in the yagna fire. In her next life, she was born as Parvati, daughter of King Himavat and resolved again to marry Shiva. As Shiva went into deep meditation, Narad Muni advised Parvati to choose the path of severe austerity. Years of rigorous penance earned her the name 'Brahmacharini.'
Meanwhile, the demon Tarakasura threatened the world. Only Shiva’s son could defeat him but Shiva was in deep penance. The gods sent Kamadeva, the god of love, to disturb Shiva’s meditation but Shiva burned him with his third eye. Unmoved by adversity, Parvati’s resolve never faltered. Shiva, impressed by her fortitude, approached her in disguise to test her. Her steadfastness prevailed and finally, Shiva accepted her, reuniting Shiva and Shakti.
Maa Brahmacharini is depicted in white clothes, barefoot, holding a rudraksha mala (rosary) in her right hand and a kamandalu (water vessel) in her left. Her calm, gracious and serene countenance reflects her inner strength, calm and deep devotion.
