Planning Activities According to Right Direction and Time at Home

In Indian thought the sun is seen not only as a source of light but also as the guiding force behind daily routine and the principles of Vastu Shastra. When the layout of a house and the rhythm of one’s day are aligned with the direction and movement of the sun life tends to feel more balanced and filled with positive energy. On this foundation arises the idea that certain times of the day are especially auspicious for specific activities and that related rooms should ideally be placed in certain directions.
As the sun appears to move across the sky during the day Vastu Shastra describes eight important time segments. In each segment the apparent direction of the sun is different and in harmony with this the texts explain which actions are considered favourable at that time and which rooms are best suited to that direction inside the home.
The basic view of Vastu Shastra is that human routine and the design of a dwelling should follow the rhythm of nature. The movement of the sun is the clearest sign of this natural rhythm. As the day progresses the sun’s direction changes and with it the level of light temperature and general atmosphere also change.
If the planning of the house and our daily actions respect these changes then health can improve energy can be steadier and the mind may remain more stable. For this reason it is said that building design should take the sun’s direction into account and that daily practices such as worship study meals rest and sleep should ideally follow the timings indicated by the sun.
The period from 3 in the night to 6 in the morning is called Brahma Muhurta. During this time the sun is considered to be connected with the north east part of the house. The environment is relatively quiet and the mind is free from the distractions of the day.
From the perspective of both Vastu and astrology this period is regarded as highly auspicious for reflection contemplation and study. Practices such as mantra japa meditation and inner spiritual work are said to bear more fruit at this time. Those who begin the day with such practices often feel lighter and more centred throughout the day.
From 6 to 9 in the morning the sun is experienced in the eastern part of the house. The sunrays of this time are considered gentle and life supporting. Vastu therefore recommends that the house be planned so that this natural light from the east can enter freely.
Opening windows and doors during these hours is regarded as healthy. It allows fresh air and soft sunlight to enter which reduces dampness and heaviness in the house. Rooms that open towards the east are especially suitable as living spaces or sitting areas where the family spends the early part of the day.
From 9 in the morning to 12 noon the sun is regarded as related to the south east part of the house. This period is seen as particularly favourable for cooking food and for bathing. In Vastu the south east is associated with the agni tattva, the element of fire, so the kitchen is considered very suitable here.
The kitchen and bathroom are naturally moist places where hygiene is important. If these rooms are located where strong sunlight enters during the day they dry more quickly and remain more healthful. For this reason it is advised that the kitchen and bathroom be in a part of the house that receives good light from the sun so that cleanliness and wellbeing are supported.
From 12 noon to 3 in the afternoon the time is known as a rest period. In this interval the sun is related to the south. Vastu Shastra suggests that the main bedroom be located primarily in this direction.
At midday the intensity of the sun is higher so it is not naturally the most gentle time for deep rest. Therefore it is recommended that curtains in the bedroom be somewhat dark so that very strong light does not fall directly inside and the room temperature remains balanced. In this way placing the bedroom in the south while moderating the light allows both body and mind to receive proper rest.
From 3 to 6 in the evening Vastu considers the time appropriate for study and focused work. During these hours the sun is connected with the south west portion of the house. This direction is understood as one of stability and seriousness.
Therefore the study room or library is recommended in the south west. Working or studying in this area can support stronger concentration and a steady mind. A study placed here is seen as especially favourable for tasks that require long periods of attention and planning.
From 6 to 9 in the evening the period is usually devoted to eating sitting together and light reading or conversation. During this time the sun is linked with the west of the house. Vastu advises that the dining room or living room be situated in the western side or western corner.
When the family gathers here for meals or to share the events of the day the natural rhythm of the west supports warmth and togetherness. The final natural light of sunset and the gradually darkening sky create an atmosphere that nourishes family bonds and relaxed time together.
From 9 at night to midnight the sun is thought to be connected with the north west. In Vastu this direction is considered useful for a bedroom, especially for night sleep.
A bedroom in the north west is believed to receive good air flow and a relatively balanced field of energy during the night. This can assist in deeper and more peaceful sleep. In the context of married life this direction is also associated with better understanding and cooperation.
From midnight until 3 in the early morning the period is regarded in Vastu as highly subtle and confidential. During this time the sun is seen as connected with the north. This direction itself is associated with wealth and prosperity.
Therefore it is suggested that valuables jewellery and important documents be kept in the northern part of the house. A safe or secure cupboard placed here is believed to strengthen financial safety and stability. In the deep stillness of the night the energy of the north is considered more concentrated which is why it is linked with protection and safeguarding.
| Time period | Apparent Sun position | Auspicious actions and rooms |
|---|---|---|
| 3 am to 6 am | North East | Reflection study prayer or meditation |
| 6 am to 9 am | East | Let light enter main living areas |
| 9 am to 12 noon | South East | Cooking kitchen and bathroom |
| 12 noon to 3 pm | South | Rest main bedroom and relax area |
| 3 pm to 6 pm | South West | Study room or library work zone |
| 6 pm to 9 pm | West | Dining and family sitting area |
| 9 pm to midnight | North West | Night bedroom use |
| Midnight to 3 am | North | Safe valuables and important papers |
When daily routine and house design both follow the natural order of the sun life tends to become more orderly and calm. Vastu Shastra simply invites each person to adopt these time based guidelines as much as is practical in everyday life.
Those building a new home can keep these principles in mind while deciding room directions and may experience long term benefits in health prosperity and mental balance. Even in existing homes one can at least harmonise daily activities with these timings and thus draw better support from the energy of the sun.
