A Detailed Exploration of the Upagraha 'Gulika' in Vedic Astrology: Myth, Calculation and Horoscope Impact

In the profound ocean of Vedic astrology, beyond the visible planets that govern our lives, lie subtle yet powerful energies known as Upagrahas (sub-planets). Among these, the most enigmatic, influential and controversial is Gulika, revered as the son and shadow of Lord Saturn (Shani) himself. Gulika is not a celestial body but a calculated point in time, embodying the deep secrets of karma, delay and the powerful principle of repetition.
In South Indian astrology, particularly the traditional practices of Kerala, the analysis of any horoscope is considered incomplete without considering Gulika. It is not merely an inauspicious period but, when understood correctly, can also reveal a secret gateway to prosperity. This article offers a detailed exploration of Gulika's mythological origins, its precise method of calculation, its impact on each house of the natal chart and a comprehensive discussion of its auspicious and inauspicious effects.
The legend of Gulika's birth is tied to two of the most powerful figures in astrological lore Ravana and Lord Shani. This story vividly explains Gulika's cruel and malefic nature.
When the son of Ravana, the king of Lanka, named Indrajit (or Meghanada) was to be born, Ravana, leveraging his astrological prowess and arrogance, imprisoned all nine planets. He commanded them to align in the 11th house (the house of gains) at the time of birth, ensuring his son would be invincible, immortal and all-powerful. Terrified of Ravana's wrath, all the planets complied.
however Lord Shani, the dispenser of justice, could not tolerate this cosmic manipulation. While positioned in the line of planets, he used his characteristic crooked gaze (vakra drishti) to extend one of his legs into the 12th house (the house of loss and expenditure). As soon as Ravana discovered this act of defiance, he became enraged and struck Shani's leg with his mace, shattering it. From the piece of flesh and blood that fell to Earth from this blow, an extremely cruel, sinful and dark Upagraha was born. It was named 'Gulika' or 'Māndi'. Being born from a part of Shani, Gulika is called the son of Saturn. It possesses Saturn-like qualities of delay, suffering and karmic retribution but its impact is considered even more intense and unpredictable than Saturn's.
Each day contains a specific period of approximately 90 minutes known as Gulika Kaal. This time is of utmost importance because actions initiated during this window are believed to have their results repeated.
This table provides an example assuming a 6:00 AM sunrise. You must calculate it based on your local sunrise time for accuracy.
| Day | Gulika Kaal Segment (out of 8) | Approximate Time |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | 1st Segment | 06:00 AM to 07:30 AM |
| Friday | 2nd Segment | 07:30 AM to 09:00 AM |
| Thursday | 3rd Segment | 09:00 AM to 10:30 AM |
| Wednesday | 4th Segment | 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM |
| Tuesday | 5th Segment | 12:00 PM to 01:30 PM |
| Monday | 6th Segment | 01:30 PM to 03:00 PM |
| Sunday | 7th Segment | 03:00 PM to 04:30 PM |
Similarly, the duration of the night or Rātrimāna (from sunset to the next sunrise), is also divided into 8 parts to determine the nighttime Gulika Kaal. The calculation for the night follows a different sequence, starting from the segment of the 5th planet from the weekday lord. For example, on a Sunday night, the first segment would belong to Jupiter (the 5th planet from the Sun) and when Saturn's segment arrives, that would be the nighttime Gulika Kaal.
The most unique and powerful principle of Gulika Kaal is Repetition. It is believed that whatever event occurs or whatever action is initiated during this period has a strong tendency to recur in life. This very principle makes it a double-edged sword.
Due to this principle of repetition, initiating auspicious activities that you wish to have repeated in your life is considered highly beneficial during Gulika Kaal. These include:
For the same reason of repetition, Gulika Kaal is considered extremely inauspicious for events that one would never want to happen again. These include:
The sign and house where Gulika is positioned at the moment of birth indicates the area of life where past life karma, hidden obstacles and delays are embedded. Traditional astrologers often create a separate "Gulika Kundali" by treating Gulika's position as the ascendant (Lagna) to perform an in-depth analysis of its impact.

| House | Impact of Gulika |
|---|---|
| 1st House (Lagna) | A profound negative impact on personality, health problems (especially in childhood), self-doubt, laziness and a feeling of a heavy burden in life. It also diminishes the positive effects of powerful Rajayogas. |
| 2nd House (Wealth) | Extreme obstacles in wealth accumulation, harsh and unpleasant speech, lack of family happiness, financial instability and food-related issues. The native may live away from family. |
| 3rd House (Courage) | As an Upachaya house, Gulika gives mixed results here. Initially, it causes trouble with siblings or hurdles in one's efforts but it makes the person extremely courageous, proud and assertive. Success is achieved after a struggle. |
| 4th House (Happiness) | Constant turmoil in domestic life, trouble to or ideological differences with the mother, lack of comfort from vehicles and property and a persistent feeling of dissatisfaction in the heart. |
| 5th House (Progeny/Intellect) | Delays or problems in having children; relationships with children may be strained. Frequent obstacles in education. High probability of failure and betrayal in love affairs. The native's intellect may be misguided. |
| 6th House (Enemies/Disease) | Also an Upachaya house. Here, Gulika gives victory over enemies but after a long and difficult struggle. Health issues, especially related to the stomach or digestion, may persist. The person may have an interest in occult sciences like tantra-mantra. |
| 7th House (Marriage) | Extreme delay in marriage, discord in marital life, constant conflicts with the spouse or the spouse may have poor health. High probability of losses in partnerships. |
| 8th House (Longevity/Death) | This house is considered extremely malefic for Gulika. It increases the risk of sudden loss, accidents and chronic, incurable diseases. At the same time, it also gives a deep and mysterious interest in occult sciences, astrology and spirituality. |
| 9th House (Fortune) | A significant lack of fortune, poor relationship with or trouble to the father, obstacles in higher education and a lack of religious faith or a tendency towards hypocrisy. The person may disrespect their ancestors. |
| 10th House (Karma) | Slow career progress, delay in recognition despite hard work. however the person may have a tendency to show off their austerities, yoga and religious activities and can build a reputation as an ascetic. |
| 11th House (Gains) | This is the best Upachaya house. Here, Gulika gives highly auspicious results. There are delays in the fulfillment of desires and income but eventually, the native achieves great success and abundant wealth through determination and relentless effort. |
| 12th House (Expenses) | Unnecessary expenses, loss of wealth, isolation, hospital visits and an inclination towards bad habits. however it also leads towards salvation (moksha) and deep spirituality if other planets are supportive. |
If Gulika is unfavorably placed in the birth chart or if Gulika Kaal falls during an important event, some simple and effective remedies can be performed to mitigate its negative effects:
1. What exactly is Gulika a planet or just a time?
Gulika is an 'Upagraha,' which is a mathematical point, not a planet. It manifests as a specific time period, 'Gulika Kaal,' during the day and night and its position at birth becomes a significant point in the horoscope.
2. Is Gulika Kaal always inauspicious?
No. It's like a double-edged sword. For inauspicious events (like death, debt), it is extremely malefic as it causes their repetition. however for auspicious activities (like investments, property purchase), it can be beneficial as it may cause them to repeat as well.
3. What is the difference between Gulika Kaal and Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is completely forbidden for starting any new and auspicious work as it brings obstacles and failure. Gulika Kaal's main effect is 'repetition,' so its impact depends on the nature of the activity.
4. What does it mean if I was born during Gulika Kaal?
It means Gulika is situated in your Lagna (1st house) in your horoscope, which can indicate struggles in life, health issues and certain negative personality traits. Astrological remedies should be performed to mitigate its effects.
5. How can I find the exact Gulika Kaal?
The precise Gulika Kaal depends on your city's local sunrise and sunset. For this, you can use a reliable Panchang or an astrological app that calculates based on local time. The table provided is only an approximate example.
