Learn powerful rituals, mantras and astrological insights to please Lord Surya and invite divine success in your life.
Lord Sun, in Vedic culture, is considered the fundamental source of life, the symbol of the soul and power. He is not only the ruler of all planets but also the cause of self-confidence, health, leadership, respect and success. According to astrology, when the Sun is positioned favorably in a person’s horoscope, their destiny, personality and social status are enhanced. On the other hand, if the Sun is weak in the horoscope, it manifests in obstacles in life, health problems, strained relationships with the father and a lack of self-strength. Therefore, pleasing Lord Sun is not only essential for spiritual growth but also for practical life.
Offering Arghya to the Sun: After your morning bath, take water in a copper vessel and mix it with red sandalwood, roli, rice, red flowers and a little sugar or honey. Face the east and offer the water as the Sun rises.
Mantras:
It is considered very auspicious to see the Sun’s rays filtering through the water as you offer it.
Sunday is dedicated to Lord Sun. On this day, in addition to offering Arghya, visiting Sun temples, wearing red clothes, applying sandalwood tilak and chanting the Surya Gayatri Mantra ("Om Bhaskaraya Vidmahe Divakaraya Dheemahi Tanno Surya Prachodayat") bring special benefits.
Surya Namaskar: Performing 12 Surya Namaskars daily increases energy, inner strength and health. With each posture, chant the 12 names of the Sun: Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Pusha, Hiranyagarbha, Marichi, Aaditya, Savita, Arka, Bhaskar.
Meditation and Sadhana: Sit facing the Sun and meditate for a few minutes, considering the Sun as the light of your life and express gratitude in your mind.
Chant these mantras 108 times on Sundays or daily.
Charity: On Sundays, donate wheat, jaggery, copper vessels, red clothes, red fruits, red flowers, desi ghee, sugar, rice, coconut and items related to the Sun.
Respecting Father and Elders: As Lord Sun represents the father, honor your father, guru and elders and seek their blessings.
Feeding Cows and Monkeys: On Sundays, feed cows jaggery-gram, bread or green fodder and feed monkeys jaggery-gram as well.
Perform Surya Arati, light a lamp, offer incense, flowers and Naivedya (offering of food). Recite the Aditya Hridaya Stotra, Surya Ashtakshari, Surya Chalisa or Surya Kavach. -
Avoid consuming salt, oil, meat and alcohol on Sundays. Do not indulge in lying, anger, using foul language or disrespecting fathers or elders. Stay away from laziness, negativity and speaking ill of others.
Worshipping Lord Sun is not just an external ritual but an extraordinary means to awaken the soul within. True devotion to the Sun lies in becoming selfless, radiant and life-giving, just as the Sun does for the entire universe. By offering Arghya to the Sun every morning, clear away the darkness of your life, face every challenge with inner strength and positivity. Through the blessings of Lord Sun, life will shine with renewed energy, health, honor and success.
Follow the path of devotion, discipline, service and sadhana to please Lord Sun. With Vedic mantras, Arghya offerings, charity, Surya Namaskar and honoring your father, the grace of the Sun will illuminate your life, leading to spiritual and material success.
