The Untold Saga of Ravana vs. Kubera-Lanka’s Wealth, Rivalry, Dharma and Unfolding Destiny
Kubera was the son of Sage Vishrava and his noble wife Devavarnini. From birth, he bore the mark of divinity. The gods appointed him as the Lord of Wealth and the protector of the northern direction (Dikpala). His residence was the island kingdom of Lanka-mysterious, prosperous and surrounded by islands.
Divine architects like Vishwakarma shaped this city into a dreamlike realm-with palaces of gold, streets of crystal and gardens blooming with celestial flowers and trees. Kubera’s royal court, the Kubera Sabha, became a center of divine knowledge and abundance where sages, Gandharvas and deities gathered.
Kubera’s most treasured possession was the Pushpaka Vimana-a divine aerial chariot of desired speed, gifted to him by Lord Brahma himself. Kubera’s reign was just, formidable and wealthy.
However, the flow of time brought a different chapter. Yielding to the Rakshasa king Sumali’s request, Sage Vishrava married the Rakshasi Kaikesi and from their union were born Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana and Shurpanakha. Kubera and Ravana were stepbrothers.
Ravana was extraordinarily intelligent, powerful and ambitious. Blessed by Shiva and Brahma, he believed himself destined to be the future sovereign of the universe.
The superiority and splendor of his brother sowed seeds of jealousy and rivalry in Ravana’s heart-“Why do I not have the right to Kubera’s Lanka?” This thought eventually turned Lanka into a battlefield.
Ravana’s downfall began not with politics but with lust. Once, while visiting Kubera’s palace, Ravana showed disrespect to Rambha, the wife of Nalakubera (Kubera’s son). Despite her pleading and tears, Ravana’s desire overcame all restraints.
When Nalakubera learned of this disgrace, he cursed Ravana fiercely: “If you force yourself upon any woman against her will, your head will split into a hundred pieces.”
This curse became a chain around Ravana’s neck-preventing him from forcibly touching Devi Sita even after abducting her. Lust tempted him but the curse restrained him.
After this event, the brothers’ relations were completely broken. Ravana’s ambition and flame of revenge ignited. Backed by his boons, mystical powers and an army of rakshasas, he attacked Lanka.
Kubera, who had lived simply with prosperity and virtue, could not withstand Ravana on the battlefield. The powerful Ravana seized the kingdom of Lanka, the Pushpaka Vimana and all treasures.
Heartbroken but dignified, Kubera retreated to Mount Kailasa, where he performed divine duties as the Lord of Wealth and devotee attendant of Lord Shiva.
Ravana’s reign in Lanka began with glory and splendor. The city’s wealth doubled, his armies grew strong and his name struck fear across the three worlds.
Yet, pride-the oldest demon-hollowed Ravana inside. The abduction of Sita and the ensuing war with Lord Rama became the cycle leading to his destruction. The very curse that bound him from touching Sita became the script for his downfall.
In contrast to Kubera’s golden glory, Ravana’s pride reduced Lanka to ashes. That city, once a symbol of prosperity, became a memory of ruin.
The story of Kubera and Ravana is not merely a conflict between two brothers but a profound lesson on karma, dharma and destiny. Kubera’s prosperity, earned through virtue, restraint and devotion, endured. Ravana seized rule through force but ended with ruin spurred by pride and ego.
Spiritually, Kubera symbolizes stability and justice-wealth that accompanies righteousness; Ravana exemplifies destruction caused by oppression and arrogance. Their life journey teaches that wealth taken unjustly does not last and prosperity without dharma inevitably leads to destruction.
