Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on the Shukla Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month. In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on 27 August, Wednesday. On this day idols of Lord Ganesh will be established in homes, temples and community pandals. The festival continues for ten days and concludes with immersion on Anant Chaturdashi which in 2025 will be observed on 6 September, Saturday. That day marks the farewell of Bappa as he returns to Kailash taking away the worries of his devotees.
Festival | Date | Day |
---|---|---|
Ganesh Chaturthi | 27 August 2025 | Wednesday |
Anant Chaturdashi (Immersion) | 6 September 2025 | Saturday |
The grandeur of establishing the idol finds its completeness only in the ritual of immersion. Installation represents invitation. Immersion represents farewell. They are two sides of the same cycle of life. Just as arrival brings joy, departure carries faith and tolerance.
Yes, scriptural belief says that Lord Ganesh resides in each home for the full ten days of the festival. Devotees consider these days as sacred. They surrender their pains and express their wishes to him. When immersion is performed, it is believed that Ganesh returns to his abode carrying with him the sufferings of his devotees.
This tradition is deeply connected with a story of the Mahabharata. Ved Vyas wanted someone to write down the great epic while he narrated it. Ganesh agreed under the condition that he would only write if Ved Vyas recited continuously without any pause.
On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Ved Vyas began his narration. For ten days, Ganesh wrote without rest. When the epic was completed on the tenth day his body temperature had risen greatly due to the continuous effort.
To provide relief to Ganesh from the heat of his body Ved Vyas made him bathe in a lake. That day was Anant Chaturdashi. Since then, idol immersion has been practiced as a tradition on this day. It was this event from which the custom of Ganesh Visarjan started.
Ganesh Visarjan is not only a conclusion of a festival. It is a profound lesson of life. Just as the clay idol dissolves into water reminding that all creation returns to its origin, it teaches humans that life too is bound by impermanence.
It also emphasises renunciation. Just as devotees part emotionally from the idol and immerse it, humans too are destined one day to part from worldly possessions. The true virtue lies in devotion, wisdom and divine connection.
The Upanishads declare that just as rivers merge into the ocean and lose their name and form the soul merges into the supreme divine being. The immersion of Ganesh idols symbolises this reality of the soul merging into the infinite Brahman.
Today, ecological emphasis has made clay idols more relevant. They dissolve in water and merge back into natural elements. This shows that faith and environment go hand in hand. Devotion is not only about spiritual connection but also about responsibility towards nature.
Ganesh Visarjan 2025 is a reminder. It tells devotees that changes are certain. Worldly possessions and relationships fade but what remains forever is devotion and faith. Immersion is not an end but a spiritual renewal.
