Explore Rishabhdev’s history, birth, nirvana and enduring cultural significance

There are very few spiritual personalities in Indian civilization whose influence bridges two great traditions. Rishabhadeva stands among these rare figures. He is revered as the first Tirthankara in Jainism and also regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Vedic tradition. His life and teachings form a timeless link between these spiritual paths.
According to Jain cosmology, at the beginning of a new cosmic cycle, Rishabhadeva was born in Ayodhya on Chaitra Krishna Navami to King Nabhi and Queen Marudevi.
His life is described in great detail in the Adipurana. Dedicated to austerity, compassion and enlightenment, he attained nirvana on Magha Krishna Chaturdashi at Mount Kailash.
The Bhagavata Purana describes him as one of the twenty-four incarnations of Vishnu.
He belonged to the Ikshvaku lineage—the same sacred lineage in which Lord Rama later incarnated.
He taught mankind the principles of civilization: agriculture, governance, discipline, yoga and dharma.
Rishabhadeva’s influence transcends sectarian boundaries:
His wisdom unites the spiritual ethos of both traditions.
His teachings continue to guide seekers toward clarity and upliftment.
