The spiritual and geographical significance of the seven dvipas
The Srimad Bhagavatam Purana presents an extraordinary perspective on the creation and geography of the world. It describes the Earth as Vasumati, composed of seven continents known as Saptadvipa. This is not only a description of geography but also a teaching of spiritual significance. In Canto 5, Chapter 16, the Saptadvipa Vasumati is clearly mentioned.
In the Satya Yuga there was a time when famine and plague spread across the Earth. The devas, filled with fear, approached Bhagavan Vishnu. He advised them to awaken Maharaja Prithu, a descendant of Maharishi Vivasvan. When Prithu appeared he felt the pain of the people and took the responsibility of nurturing the Earth.
Prithu organized agriculture, trade and social structures. His reign brought prosperity and balance. The Earth was named Prithvi after him, signifying the land of Prithu.
According to the Bhagavata Purana the Earth is divided into seven dvipas. Each dvipa is named after a sacred tree or a symbolic feature. The table below provides a summary.
Name of Dvipa | Symbol / Shape | Possible Geographic Correlation |
---|---|---|
Jambu dvipa | Jambu tree, lotus shaped | Asia (Himalayas at center) |
Salmali dvipa | Salmali tree (silk cotton) | Africa |
Kusa dvipa | Kusa grass, triangular land | Europe |
Kraunca dvipa | Kraunca bird (crane), pleasant climate | North America |
Saka dvipa | Inhabited by the Sakas | Southeast Asia and Oceania |
Plaksa dvipa | Plaksa tree (Indian fig tree) | South America |
Puskara dvipa | Lotus shaped, realm of bliss | Antarctica or legendary land |
The concept of the seven dvipas goes beyond geography. Each dvipa symbolizes a dimension of life.
The view presented in the Bhagavata Purana is not only ancient geography but also a guide to human life and spiritual journey. Saptadvipa Vasumati shows that every part of the Earth has its unique identity and inspires humanity to move towards inner fulfillment.
