Stories of Savitri’s curse, Shiva’s curse and Saraswati incident behind the absence of Brahma Ji’s worship
Among the trinity, Lord Brahma is regarded as the creator of the universe. Imagine, the one who brought creation into existence is the only deity without regular worship. While Lord Shiva and Vishnu have temples across the world, Brahma has only one famous shrine at Pushkar in Rajasthan. Why is it so? Ancient scriptures narrate several fascinating stories and curses behind this.
It is said that once Brahma Ji chose Pushkar as the site for a fire ritual. During his search, a lotus slipped from his hand and at the place where it fell, three sacred lakes emerged - Brahma Pushkar, Vishnu Pushkar and Shiva Pushkar.
The ritual required the presence of his wife. He waited for Savitri Ji but she did not arrive on time. Fearing the loss of the auspicious moment, Brahma Ji married another woman and began the ritual.
When Savitri Ji discovered this, she was enraged and cursed Brahma Ji - “Though you are the creator of the world, no one shall worship you.” Since then, except for Pushkar, no temple of Brahma Ji has been built.
Another tale tells of a conflict between Brahma Ji and Vishnu Ji over superiority. To resolve this, Shiva manifested as an endless pillar of fire and declared, “Whoever finds its end will be deemed supreme.”
Vishnu Ji humbly accepted his inability to reach the end. But Brahma Ji deceived. He asked the Ketaki flower to bear false witness that he had found the top. The flower agreed.
Shiva appeared and said, “Brahma, you have lied. From today, no one shall worship you.” He also cursed the Ketaki flower, forbidding its use in any ritual. This is why Ketaki is never offered to Shiva.
Another belief connects Goddess Saraswati with Brahma Ji. She was considered his daughter. Scriptures say that Brahma Ji’s improper attachment to her was against dharma. Lord Shiva, angered by this act, cut off Brahma Ji’s fifth head. This gave Brahma Ji the stigma of Brahma-hatya and his worship was prohibited. Haridwar’s Brahmakund, where ancestor rituals are performed, is associated with this incident.
According to scriptures, in the present age of Kaliyuga, Brahma Ji’s name is not invoked in any auspicious ceremony. Be it a wedding, yagya or havan, his remembrance is absent due to Shiva’s curse.
