Explore the true identities, roles and importance of the 33 unique deities described in the Vedic hymns

Before the rise of later Puranic deities like Shiva and Vishnu, the Vedas described a cosmic order governed by elemental, moral and life-oriented powers. These were the Trayastrinshat Deva, the 33 gods of the Rigveda. The number 33 represents foundational forces rather than a rigid list of divine personalities.
The 33 deities belong to four groups:
These represent the essential building blocks of existence.
The Rudras are not merely destroyers but the energies that sustain and withdraw life.
They reflect the earliest philosophical roots of Shiva.
The Adityas govern cosmic order, seasons and moral harmony.
Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, Bhaga, Daksha, Aṃsha, Tvashta, Savitr, Pushan, Vivasvan, Aṃsha and Vishnu—each represents a principle that sustains the world.
Their principles survive even if their names are less familiar.
| Mantra Name | Romanized | Meaning |
