Explore the mysterious tale of Brahma’s birth from Hiranyagarbha and creation
In Indian spirituality, Brahma is known as the original creator of the universe, the source of knowledge and the revealer of the Vedas. He is the first deity of the Hindu Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), whose role is to create and expand the universe. The story of Brahma’s origin is not only full of spiritual mystery but also illustrates the birth of the cosmos, the expansion of consciousness and the eternal cycle of creation.
The story begins at a time when there was no sky, no earth, no directions and no time just an endless, boundless, silent and dark ocean. This was the time of pralaya (cosmic dissolution), when the entire universe was submerged in the vast ocean. Hidden within this ocean was the seed of creation - a divine potential that awaited the right moment for manifestation.
From this boundless ocean, an astonishing and luminous golden egg, called Hiranyagarbha (the Golden Womb), emerged. This egg was the womb of the universe, containing immense energy, consciousness and all possibilities of creation. Inside this egg, Brahma existed in deep meditation and yoga but he was yet to awaken for the work of creation.
As the cycle of time began, the golden egg cracked open and Brahma emerged from it. As Brahma awoke, he saw the four directions and his four faces manifested, symbolizing the four Vedas, the four yugas, the four directions and the four stages of life. Brahma’s first utterance was the sacred "Om", which produced the first sound and vibration in the universe - the first cosmic resonance, the first life.
Brahma created ten Prajapatis (mind-born sons) who were responsible for expanding creation. He then created the Saptarishis (Seven Sages), gods, demons, humans, animals, plants and all living beings. Brahma established the diversity of creation, the cycle of life and the principles of karma.

Brahma has very few temples dedicated to him in India, the most famous being the Pushkar Brahma Temple in Rajasthan. His worship is mainly done during the beginning of creation, Yajnas (sacrificial rites), Vedic recitations and the commencement of creative works. Brahma is also known as Pitamaha (the grandfather of the universe) and his worship signifies the beginning of all creation and knowledge.
Brahma’s birth is not just the beginning of physical creation but a symbol of the eternal expansion of consciousness, knowledge and action.
The story of Brahma’s origin is not just a mythological tale but the foundation of Indian philosophy, Vedanta and spirituality. From Hiranyagarbha’s emergence, Brahma’s creation of the universe and the expansion of knowledge - it all teaches us that creation, knowledge and wisdom are inseparable aspects of life. Brahma’s four faces and four arms give us the message of knowledge, creation and balance in all directions. Every time we create something new and awaken our inner consciousness, we live the energy of Brahma. This is the eternal cycle of creation. "Brahma’s creative power never ends; it resides within each person born under Rohini Nakshatra." This energy of creation is what drives the universe and gives meaning to life itself. Brahma’s blessing continues to guide Rohini natives to a life of creativity, growth and prosperity.
