After the Mahabharata war, Parikshit became the king of Hastinapur. During a hunt, he reached the ashram of Sage Shameek. The sage was deep in meditation and did not respond. Offended, Parikshit placed a dead snake around his neck.
Shameek’s son, Shringi, became furious and cursed Parikshit that he would die on the seventh day by the bite of Takshaka.
On the seventh day, according to the curse, Takshaka entered the palace through deception and bit Parikshit, ending his life and the Kuru lineage.

Parikshit’s son Janamejaya resolved to avenge his father’s death. He performed a massive serpent sacrifice in which the power of mantras pulled serpents into the sacrificial fire.
To save himself, Takshaka sought refuge in Lord Indra’s palace. Indra hid him beneath his throne. But the force of the sacrifice was so strong that even Indra began getting pulled toward the fire along with Takshaka.
Astika, born to a Brahmin mother and serpent father, was deeply pained by the destruction of serpents. He arrived at the sacrifice and requested Janamejaya to stop the ritual.
Impressed by Astika’s wisdom and humility, Janamejaya granted him a boon. Astika asked him to stop the serpent sacrifice, which Janamejaya agreed to. Thus Takshaka and many serpents were saved.
The story shows that revenge only brings destruction, while forgiveness brings peace.
Protecting serpents symbolizes the preservation of nature and compassion for all beings.
