Among the serpents in Indian mythology, Vasuki holds a position of profound reverence. He is remembered as the king of serpents, the devoted follower of Lord Shiva, the central force in the churning of the ocean and the divine ornament adorning Shiva’s neck. His story reflects courage, sacrifice, service and unwavering devotion.
Vasuki was born to Sage Kashyapa and Kadru. He is the elder brother of serpents like Shesha and Takshaka. Vasuki is known for immense strength, endurance and purity of devotion, which earned him the grace of the gods and Lord Shiva.
When devas and asuras decided to churn the cosmic ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, they needed a rope to rotate Mount Mandara. Vasuki volunteered without hesitation and coiled his massive body around the mountain.
As the churning continued, his body endured intense friction and pain, yet he did not abandon the path of service. The first outcome of the churning was the deadly poison Halahala. Vasuki bore its fiery fumes while Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the universe.
