When the mountain began to sink the tortoise stayed

The scene of Samudra Manthan is extremely restless. Devas and daityas both pull the rope. Vasuki becomes the rope. Mandarachal becomes the churning rod. The ocean roars. Poison comes out. Jewels come out. Everything is turning. Yet one point does not turn at all. That point is beneath the mountain. There Lord Vishnu lies in the form of Kurma. The whole mountain rests on his back. If he moves even for one moment the churning would stop, nectar would not appear and creation would drown.

This form speaks the language of Shani Deva in Jyotisha. Saturn is slow. Saturn is heavy. Saturn gives fruit late. People take Saturn as only a planet of suffering. That view is incomplete. Saturn is the planet that teaches how to bear weight. Saturn is the karaka of land, building, bone, karma, time, continuity of work and immovable property. What is wanted at once is asked of Rahu. What must stay is given by Saturn. Kurma avatar is the divine picture of that slow yet strong motion of Saturn.

The secret of the story is this. Fruit does not come from turning above. Fruit comes from the still base below. The person who only churns for results and does not build a base finds their Mandarachal sinking again and again. The base is regular karma, honest repayment of debt, honour of land, sleep of the body and waiting upon time. This is the slow path of Saturn. Slow does not mean failed. Slow means ripened.

Kurma wears a shell. When danger comes he draws in the limbs. This is not cowardice. This is policy. Saturn also teaches that every battle need not be fought. Some battles must be left so that one may grow strong within. The native who reacts to every matter scatters prana. The native who becomes silent like Kurma when needed gathers prana. That same prana later becomes property, position and prestige.

Vastu Shastra treats the house as a body. The foundation is the spine. If the foundation shakes, every room feels unstable. The tortoise is a symbol of that very foundation. Keeping a live creature at home is not necessary. A clean pratima of metal, stone, crystal or clay is enough. The pratima should not be broken, dusty or dishonoured.

Rules of placement

• The face of the tortoise should not point out of the main door
• Do not keep it in a bathroom, rubbish corner or cluttered nook
• If a crystal tortoise sits in a water bowl, change the water and keep it clean
• A heavy clay tortoise in the south west is held to help property settle
• A light shining tortoise in the north steadies the door of income
• Do not keep a heavy murti at the pillow in the sleeping room. A light pratima may support sleep
• In an office the tortoise may sit like a stable base toward the back

Vastu fruit sits only when conduct in the house is also like Kurma. If anger, neglect of debt and contempt for the foundation fill the day, a murti alone cannot hold the mountain.

Psychology of instability and karmic logic
