In-depth Analysis of Drekkana and Its Insights in a Birth Chart

While reading a birth chart, attention often remains limited to the twelve signs and twelve houses, yet the deeper analysis in Jyotish unfolds only through divisional charts. One of the most important among them is Drekkana, also called Dreshkana or the D 3 chart. Drekkana is one third of a sign. Since every sign covers 30 degrees, each Drekkana spans 10 degrees and every sign contains three Drekkanas.
Drekkana is not just a mathematical division. It becomes a key to understanding siblings, courage, attitude, inner drives and several subtle indications that do not appear clearly in the main chart. Ancient and classical texts describe multiple methods of constructing this division and each method gives a specific kind of D 3 chart that serves its own purpose.
Classical Jyotish mentions several kinds of D 3. Four main Drekkana types are usually highlighted.
| No. | Name of Drekkana | Primary area of application |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Parashara Drekkana | Siblings, co born relations, courage, key personality traits |
| 2 | Jagannath Drekkana | Past life karma and deep karmic patterns |
| 3 | Somanath Drekkana | Sexual desire, approach to intimacy and sensuality |
| 4 | Pravritti Traya Drekkana | Effort, initiative and drives for achieving goals |
Among these, Parashara Drekkana is the most widely used and practically applied form. When D 3 or Drekkana is mentioned without further qualification, it is generally understood as Parashara Drekkana.
Maharshi Parashara treats the D 3 chart as a major tool for judging siblings and personal effort. Through Parashara Drekkana
In Parashara Drekkana every sign is divided into three parts and the lords of these Drekkanas are assigned in a specific manner.
The basic rule may be summarised as follows.
A simple example makes this clearer.
| Sign | First Drekkana | Second Drekkana | Third Drekkana |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Ruled by Mangala | Ruled by Surya | Ruled by Guru |
By applying the same logic to all signs, each of the thirty six Drekkanas obtains a planetary ruler. This becomes a crucial base while interpreting planetary placements in the D 3 chart.
Parashara does not limit the discussion to planetary rulers alone. He also assigns three great sages as presiding deities of the three Drekkanas of each sign.
These sages carry deep symbolic meaning.
Seen in this way, the three Drekkanas of each sign can correspond to three layers of human existence, namely soul, mind and senses.
According to Parashara, Drekkana should be used while analysing matters relating to brothers and sisters.
Thus a single D 3 chart can offer insights at spiritual, mental and physical levels regarding the same relationships.
Other forms of D 3 are used for more specific purposes.
Beyond sibling matters, D 3 is applied in several additional contexts.
There are thirty six Drekkanas in the zodiac since each sign has three. Among them, the twenty second Drekkana is regarded as especially sensitive. It is called Khara and its lord is known as Kharesh. This Drekkana is counted among the primary malefic factors of a chart and is associated with death or serious suffering. Hence it is also termed Niryaana Drekkana, the Drekkana of departure.
Two simple approaches can be used to find the twenty second Drekkana.
First method
Second method
A more practical shortcut is to treat the lord of the eighth house in the D 3 chart as the lord of the twenty second Drekkana. This planet becomes Kharesh and is watched carefully in health, accident and longevity analysis.
According to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the nature of the twenty second Drekkana can indicate the cause or manner of death. Even before the final span of life, this zone often correlates with physical suffering, accidents or serious health disturbances.
Key points are understood in the following way.
Drekkana does not only speak about longevity or suffering. Certain Drekkanas can also hint at lifestyle and behavioural patterns.
Such indications are elaborated in classical works like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Sarvartha Chintamani and Saravali, where many results are assigned to different Drekkanas.
Western astrology also divides each sign into three parts called decanates. Technically this is comparable to the Jagannath Drekkana. In that system, the decanates of Sun, Moon and ascendant receive special weight.
Thus both Drekkana in Jyotish and decanates in Western astrology help uncover hidden strengths and weaknesses in character, the quality of sibling ties, courage and several deeper dimensions that are not easily seen from the main birth chart alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the primary use of the Drekkana or D 3 chart
The main use of the D 3 chart lies in understanding siblings, courage, effort and the deeper layer of personality. Especially through Parashara Drekkana one can assess circumstances around brothers and sisters, the strength or strain in those bonds and the inner lessons that arise from them.
How do Parashara, Jagannath and Somanath Drekkanas differ
Parashara Drekkana is the standard D 3 focused on siblings and courage. Jagannath Drekkana highlights past life karma and deep karmic background. Somanath Drekkana is applied to judge sexual urge, desire and approach to intimacy, while Pravritti Traya Drekkana reveals effort and initiative.
Why is the twenty second Drekkana considered inauspicious
The twenty second Drekkana, also known as Niryaana Drekkana, is linked to the eighth house and can point to death, accidents, serious disease or bodily suffering. Its lord, Kharesh, becomes important for health and longevity assessment, especially when activated by dasha and transit.
Should one always feel afraid if strong indications from the twenty second Drekkana exist
Fear is not useful. The influence of the twenty second Drekkana becomes more serious only when the birth chart, dasha and transit all activate it without benefic protection. Strong benefics, good dignity and supportive aspects can considerably soften its effects.
What role does Drekkana play in horary and medical astrology
In horary astrology Drekkana is used to see how effort, obstacles, health and outcome will unfold around the question. In medical astrology D 3 helps to judge suffering, nature of disease, accidents or operations, particularly when the twenty second Drekkana and Kharesh are significantly involved.
