A balanced dharma of restraint and remembrance, not hunger, during serious illness

The scriptures clearly say, Shariramadyam khalu dharmasadhanam. This means that a healthy body is the first requirement for properly practising dharma, vows and duty. When the body itself is weak, treating a harsh fast as an essential religious duty is not wise. Especially when a person is dealing with diabetes, heart disease or any other serious illness, the protection of health becomes the first dharma.
In such a situation, insisting on fasting to the point of hunger goes against compassion. God is compassionate. God does not want anyone to perform devotion by worsening illness. True dharma is the one that protects the body, the mind and life together. therefore in serious illness, a mental fast, a disciplined diet, taking medicine and remembering God’s name are the proper path.
| Subject | Balanced view |
|---|---|
| Importance of the body | Basis of dharma and practice |
| Serious illness | Not the time for harsh fasting |
| Mental fast | Following sattva and remembrance |
| Medicine and diet | Not opposed to dharma |
| Divine feeling | Compassion and protection |
| Main goal | Devotion with health |
Protecting a healthy body is also a form of spiritual responsibility.
Fasting does not only mean giving up food. Fasting also means resolve, restraint, purity and self control. A person who cannot give up food because of illness can still keep a true fast by restraining the mind, avoiding anger, staying away from falsehood and remembering God’s name.
It is very important to understand that dharma never works against the body. If the body needs nourishment, then giving it medicine and proper food is the right decision. If the mind needs peace, then prayer, silence and sattvic thoughts should be given. That is a mental fast. It has less outer harshness but its inner practice can be deeper.
Fast in its true sense is the steadiness of resolve, not making the body suffer.
The arrival of illness is not proof of spiritual weakness. Illness is a state of the body. Devotion is the direction of the mind. It is not correct to place both on the same scale and say that God will be displeased if fasting is not observed. God’s vision is loving, not punitive.
When a person is taking medicine, following a doctor’s advice and living according to their health condition, the sattvic state of that mind can become the most valuable practice. If that mind has less anger, greed, fear and desire, then the person is still following dharma even in illness. This is a higher form of fasting.
| Situation | Proper conduct |
|---|---|
| Serious illness | Give priority to health |
| Medicine is ongoing | Follow medical advice |
| Hunger cannot be tolerated | Fasting is not compulsory |
| Mind is restless | Prayer and quiet remembrance |
| Life has limitations | Acceptance and restraint |
| Feeling of devotion | Mental fast may be complete |
In times of illness, compassion becomes true dharma.
This question is very deep. Some people fear that if they do not fast, God will become angry. But in the Vedic view, God is compassionate. God does not want worship through weakness, hunger, pain or harm to the body. Worship means surrender, purity and love.
If fasting harms the body, then it may be ignorance rather than devotion. God wants not the damage of the body but the truth of the heart. For a patient, taking medicine properly, eating light food and remaining sattvic within is far more meaningful. That is wise practice. There is no display in it, only balance.
The beauty of devotion lies in protecting life, not destroying it.
A mental fast means that a person reduces impure tendencies of the mind and keeps sattvic discipline within. For this, it is not necessary to starve the body. If a patient is eating, that food may be taken with the feeling of prasada, meaning sacred offering. If medicine is being taken, it may also be accepted as duty and treatment. In this way, life itself becomes practice.
The most important thing in a mental fast is the direction of the mind. If a person avoids anger, excitement, jealousy, fear and excess, then the real purpose of fasting is being fulfilled. Such a fast also makes the home atmosphere peaceful and gives the patient inner steadiness.
Remembrance can keep the soul high even within bodily limits.
Religion and medicine should never be seen as opposites. Taking medicine is not irreligious. Following a proper diet is not a sin. Understanding the body’s signals is wisdom. In truth, this too is a form of practice, because practice does not ignore the body. It keeps the body balanced.
Sometimes people make fasting so harsh out of fear that the illness becomes worse. That is neither dharma nor devotion. Dharma is what supports life. Devotion is what purifies the mind. When both move together, practice becomes complete.
| Subject | View |
|---|---|
| Medicine | Means of treatment |
| Proper diet | Protection of the body |
| Harsh fasting | Only when the body allows it |
| Mental purity | Possible in every condition |
| Sattvic life | Useful even for the patient |
| God remembrance | Helpful in every state |
The essence of dharma lies in protecting life.
For a person with serious illness, fasting means staying within one’s capacity while keeping a pure feeling. This fast can be beautiful and powerful because there is less ego and more humility. The patient should understand that their health is not an obstacle to devotion.
If a person cannot fast but can remain mentally restrained, calm and reverent, that is true resolve. In such a fast, family support, medical advice and spiritual understanding work together. It does not exhaust life. It sustains it.
Restraint can be the most beautiful form of practice for a patient too.
Many patients feel sad that they cannot fast. This guilt is inappropriate. God is not a strict accountant who only counts hunger. In God’s vision, true surrender matters more. If a person cannot fast because of illness, there is no sin or lack in that.
Instead of creating guilt in the heart, one should keep gratitude and acceptance. Understanding the body’s limit is also a sign of spiritual maturity. When a person accepts their condition, the mind becomes more peaceful and the practice becomes more genuine.
| Cause of guilt | Right view |
|---|---|
| Inability to fast | Reality of health |
| Anxiety of the mind | Unnecessary fear |
| Lack of devotion | Not true if remembrance remains |
| Limit of the body | A truth worthy of respect |
| Distance from God | Not present if feeling is pure |
Acceptance can become the deepest form of prayer.
