The Saga of the Divine Bell's Roar and Invincible Courage

Maa Chandraghanta Story: Resonance of Divine Bell and Slaying of Demons

The third stage of the holy festival of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Chandraghanta, the extremely radiant and heroic form of Goddess Durga. She received this name because of the divine half moon adorned on her forehead which appears like a heavy ancient bell. It is described in the Puranic accounts that when this supernatural bell rings, its mere resonance ends all negative energies of the universe. Although devotees worship her as the personification of peace and gentleness, the story of her bravery still provides goosebumps as she once completely destroyed a demon army that no god was able to defeat, solely with the power of her sound.

When the Terrifying Outcry of Demons Echoed at the Gates of Heaven

After the holy marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, peace was established in the celestial world for some time but this stability did not last long. Dhumralochan, the extremely cruel general of Mahishasura, intoxicated by his invincible power, suddenly attacked the dwelling place of the gods. Along with Dhumralochan were thousands of fierce demon warriors who were not only skilled in physical strength but also in illusory powers. These demons were so heartless that they ruined the gardens of the gods and began to defile the hermitages of the sages. Lord Indra, the protector of heaven, fought bravely with his army but the increasing number of demons and their illusory tricks compelled the gods to retreat. When the darkness of unrighteousness and the fear of death spread everywhere, all the deities invoked the Adi Shakti in distress.

The Grand Warrior Form and Valor of Maa Chandraghanta

Hearing the piteous cry of the gods, Goddess Parvati assumed an extremely brilliant and fierce form known as Maa Chandraghanta. Her body was shining like molten gold and her eyes reflected the resolve to protect Dharma. She appeared in the middle of the battlefield riding a massive and powerful lion whose fierce roar made the center of the earth tremble. The Mother had ten arms in which she carried extremely powerful weapons like the trident of Lord Shiva, the discus of Vishnu, the arrow of Agni and the thunderbolt of Indra. Her most special identity was that divine bell shaped crescent on her forehead. This was not an ordinary ornament but contained the essence of all the sounds of the universe and the invocation of death for the enemies.

That Moment When the Resonance of the Divine Bell Changed the Course of War

As the massive demon army of Dhumralochan approached Maa Chandraghanta, Dhumralochan mocked the concentration and gentleness of the Goddess. It was the belief of the demons that a lone woman would never be able to face their illusory army of millions. The Goddess, with her gentle smile, awakened the supernatural bell located on her forehead. Suddenly, such a terrifying and sharp roar emerged from that bell which the demons had not imagined even in their worst dreams. That sound was not of an ordinary bell but was like the celestial lightning striking at the time of cataclysm. The waves of that divine resonance were so influential that they took away the thinking power of the demons. The demons began to strike each other with their own weapons because that sound created confusion in their minds.

The Complete Destruction of the Demon Army and Re establishment of Dharma

Taking full advantage of that fierce chaos and clamor, Maa Chandraghanta began to strike with her weapons. Her lion started running at the speed of light in the battlefield and the sword of the Mother began to sever the heads of the unrighteous. Dhumralochan tried to build black clouds and shower poisonous rain through his illusions but the sound of the Mother's bell scattered those clouds in the sky itself. As soon as the Mother swung her trident, the generals of the demons began to fall on the ground one by one. Dhumralochan finally attacked gathering his entire strength but the Mother's lion pounced on him and the Goddess ended him with her sword. Within a few hours, that demon army considered invincible turned into a heap of ashes. Seeing this heroic and powerful form of the Mother, the gods showered Parijat flowers from heaven with great joy and the clarion call of the Goddess's victory resonated in the universe.
