The End of Invincible Evil through Divine Sound

The saga of the third stage of Navratri is dedicated to that form of Maa Chandraghanta where a wonderful confluence of gentleness and bravery is seen. The bell shaped half moon adorned on her forehead is not just an ornament but is considered the center of all the sounds of the universe. In Puranic accounts, an incident is described that proved that where physical weapons fail, the power of divine resonance has the capacity to change the destiny of the universe. This story dates back to the time when the peace of the Himalayas was being disturbed by a demon whom no weapon was able to even touch.
In ancient times, an extremely cruel demon named Dhumraketu had created an outcry in all three worlds on the strength of his demonic powers. That demon had received an extremely specific boon from Lord Brahma according to which no physical weapon could cause him harm. Whenever the gods attacked him with swords or arrows, the demon would render those weapons ineffective through his illusory power. In the arrogance of being invincible, he began to defile the hermitages of the sages and obstruct the sacrifices. Lord Indra, the protector of heaven, also stood helpless before that demon with his entire army because his military power was not able to exert any influence on him.
Distressed by the atrocities of the demon, all the sages gathered in the forests of the Himalayas and invoked the Adi Shakti in a piteous voice. The sages prayed to the Mother to manifest as a power that could end that subtle illusion which was impossible to sever with weapons of iron or stone. Hearing their sincere cry, Goddess Parvati assumed an extremely radiant warrior form known as Maa Chandraghanta. She entered the battlefield riding a powerful lion and divine weapons were adorned in her ten hands but the real basis of her brilliance was that divine bell on her forehead.
As soon as Dhumraketu saw the Goddess in the battlefield, he began to laugh. He mocked, saying that when Indra's thunderbolt did nothing to him, how would the weapons of a woman kill him. The war began and the Goddess released many divine arrows but the body of Dhumraketu would become just as it was before. The demon spread a net of black smoke all around through his illusion, due to which the gods stopped seeing anything. Then Maa Chandraghanta did something that even that illusory demon had not imagined. The Goddess put aside the weapons of her hands and made a divine strike on that bell shaped crescent located on her forehead.
Suddenly, such a fierce and sharp resonance echoed in the entire universe that it numbed the mind of the demon. That sound was not like an ordinary bell ringing but contained that resonance of creation and cataclysm of the universe which is called Brahma Nad. The vibration waves of that divine sound were so intense that they shattered the illusory energy within the body of Dhumraketu that protected him from weapons. The body of the demon began to tremble under the influence of that sound and he lost his direction. As soon as the sound broke the protective shield of the demon at a subtle level, the Mother defeated him without losing time.
The caves of the Himalayas became free from that fierce clamor and were silent again. The sages experienced that what thousands of weapons could not do, a single divine roar of the Mother did. The gods showered flowers while accepting that this form of the Goddess not only slays the enemies but also completely ends the negativity of the whole world with its resonance. This victory of Maa Chandraghanta reminds us that sometimes the power of silence and sound is much more influential than physical force. This story inspires us to face our challenges with self confidence.
