Legend of the Slaying of Durgamasura and Bhayanaka

The seventh day of the holy festival of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kalaratri. This is that extremely fierce and destructive form of Adi Shakti which restores balance by removing darkness from the universe. Although her appearance looks scary she plays the role of a protector for her devotees. Behind her dark complexion and disheveled hair lies that power which ends chaos. Many accounts are found related to Mother Kalaratri in ancient legends among which one wonderful story tells how she once protected the entire knowledge of the universe itself.
It is a matter of ancient times when a powerful demon named Durgamasura performed intense penance to Lord Brahma and obtained a special boon from him. On the strength of this boon he not only obtained great powers but his ego also increased. Durgamasura began to misuse his powers and he stole the Vedas by deceit. The Vedas are those holy texts in which spiritual knowledge and cosmic laws are contained. Without the Vedas it became impossible for the sages to perform rituals and worship. Slowly the balance of nature began to collapse and the rain stopped. Crops in the fields dried up and chaos spread everywhere. The gods realized that if the Vedas were not brought back the spiritual foundation of the universe would be destroyed.
When the gods themselves failed to recover that holy knowledge they performed collective worship of the Mother Goddess. In response to their prayers the extremely powerful form of Mother Kalaratri appeared. Her appearance was so fearsome that heaven also trembled seeing it. Flames of fire were coming out from her breath and the sky turned black just by her presence. This fierce form actually possessed the power to restore cosmic balance. Mother Kalaratri moved toward the kingdom of that demon where he had hidden the stolen Vedas. Durgamasura was very proud of his illusory powers and defense system.
As soon as the mother reached the battlefield divine energy began to flow there. A fierce battle took place between Mother Kalaratri and the demon army. The mother ended thousands of demons with indomitable strength. Finally she faced Durgamasura himself. The demon attacked with many illusory weapons but Mother Kalaratri fragmented every defense system. The mother defeated that demon with her divine power and recovered the holy Vedas. When the Vedas were handed back to the sages rituals began again and rain fell on the earth.
Another interesting story related to Mother Kalaratri is that of the demon named Bhayanaka who made the fear of beings his food. In ancient times this demon used to grow stronger the more he created terror in the minds of the people. Villages and forests slowly began to sink into darkness because that demon had terrified the sages and ordinary people. The gods realized that it is not possible to defeat him with ordinary weapons because the source of his power was fear itself.
When Mother Kalaratri appeared on the call of the gods her presence was so intense that for the first time the demon army itself experienced fear. When Bhayanaka attacked the mother he thought that like other people the mother would also be afraid. But Mother Kalaratri remained completely fearless. Due to not getting fear as food the power of the demon began to decrease rapidly. His strength began to disappear with the mother moving forward. Finally Mother Kalaratri defeated that demon and freed the world from that terror.
These stories clarify the true meaning of Mother Kalaratri. She represents the power that removes ignorance and restores intellect and wisdom. Just as the mother took back the Vedas from the demon devotees believe that she removes confusion and darkness from the human mind. On the seventh day of Navratri people worship her for courage and clarity. Her stories remind us that whenever darkness challenges knowledge and truth the Mother Goddess appears to restore light and balance.
