When the Goddess Swallowed Demon Andhak's Illusion

The seventh day of the holy festival of Navratri is dedicated to Mother Kalaratri who is considered the most fearsome and powerful form of Adi Shakti. The name Kalaratri itself means the night of time which is the presiding deity of destruction and transformation. Although devotees know her as the goddess who slays demons an extremely astonishing account is found in the ancient texts where the mother had swallowed the darkness itself to save the entire universe. This story highlights that aspect of divine power where the goddess absorbs the infinite void within herself to protect the light.
According to the stories of ancient times a time had come when a strange and terrifying darkness began spreading across the entire universe. This was not an ordinary darkness of night but a destructive energy that was slowly swallowing stars and planets. The gods soon realized that this catastrophic darkness was the result of the illusion of a powerful demon named Andhak. He had gained control over the energies of shadow and void. The more fear and chaos that demon spread the more dense and powerful this darkness became. Within no time the entire creation reached the verge of merging into the night of eternity.
The gods tried to fight that demon and the darkness spread by him with their full strength but all their divine weapons proved to be ineffective. That darkness would absorb every strike within itself and its expansion continued to increase. The situation reached such a point that even the light of the Sun and the Moon began to fade. Seeing the existence of the universe in danger the terrified gods took shelter of the Mother of the Universe and prayed for protection. Hearing their pathetic call a power emerged from the center of the void that even stopped time.
Mother Kalaratri appeared from that deep void of the universe. Her appearance was as powerful as it was scary. The color of her skin was black like dense darkness and her hair was waving in the air. Fierce sparks of fire were coming out from the breath of the mother which were a sign that the end of unrighteousness is now near. She moved forward riding on her vehicle the donkey and the entire universe trembled just by her arrival. This form of the mother was like death itself for any demonic power.
Instead of attacking the darkness of that demon Mother Kalaratri did something that no one had imagined. She opened her mouth and began to pull that entire destructive darkness within herself. That huge cosmic shadow which was swallowing the constellations was now being pulled toward the mouth of the mother. As the mother was drinking that darkness the entire universe began to become illuminated again. The demon Andhak whose power was based on that darkness began to become extremely weak because his illusion had now merged within the mother.
As soon as that darkness was completely finished Andhak had no power left to protect himself. Mother Kalaratri faced that demon and destroyed him completely with her divine power. In this way that crisis ended which had planned to swallow the entire creation. The sparkle returned to the stars again and peace was established in all the worlds. The gods praised the mother with joy and honored her as the protector of the universe.
This legend clarifies the true meaning of Mother Kalaratri. She does not just kill demons but she has the capacity to absorb darkness itself whether it is outside or within a human being. This is the reason why she is considered the goddess who removes fear and negativity. On the seventh day of Navratri devotees worship her so that the darkness of ignorance can be erased from their lives and they can obtain mental strength. This story of the mother teaches us that even the deepest darkness cannot stay before divine power.
