When the Curse of Demon Krishnashila Ended

The eighth day of the holy festival of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Mahagauri who is the most serene and radiant form of Mother Durga. She is usually remembered as a calm and compassionate goddess whose brilliance resembles the purity of moonlight. Although ancient traditions also describe that a hidden power resides within this gentle form. This is the power which is capable of destroying the darkness that spreads silently across the world. A lesser known legend related to Maa Mahagauri is about a strange demon whose curse once made the entire mountains black and lifeless.
In ancient times there lived a powerful demon named Krishnashila. The meaning of his name was black stone because wherever he went the land slowly lost its brightness. Krishnashila possessed a frightening ability. When he focused his energy on any place the natural radiance of that land would disappear. Rivers would become muddy and mountains would begin to turn dark. Forests would lose their vitality. His power did not destroy things immediately but instead it sucked the life and purity out of nature. The Himalayan mountains which were the residence of many sages and the birthplace of the goddess herself soon began to suffer from this strange curse.
The sages living in the mountains experienced something unusual. The snow that once shone like silver was now turning grey like ash. Sacred rivers had lost their clarity. Even the air began to feel heavy and lifeless. Meditation became difficult and the sages realized that a dark power was spreading throughout the Himalayas. When they learned that the demon Krishnashila was responsible for this they prayed to the Mother Goddess for protection. Hearing the pathetic call of the sages the Mother Goddess appeared in the calm yet powerful form of Maa Mahagauri.
Mahagauri did not arrive with roaring storms or blazing weapons but instead she appeared with a calm radiance. Her body was shining like pure crystal and her presence filled the mountains with peaceful light. But the demon made the mistake of underestimating her. Krishnashila believed that only the fierce and destructive forms of the goddess could challenge him. Seeing the serene form of Mahagauri he mocked her and thought that her power would be weak.
As the demon advanced Maa Mahagauri did not attack him with weapons. Instead of this she released a powerful divine light beam from her body. This radiant energy spread through the mountains like a wave of moonlight. Wherever that light touched the darkness created by the demon began to disappear. The snow regained its brilliance and the rivers became transparent again. Forests began to shine with life. The demon suddenly realized a terrifying truth. His power depended on darkness but the aura of Maa Mahagauri was completely dissolving that darkness.
The demon tried to increase his dark energy to defeat the goddess. But every time he released his power the light of Maa Mahagauri became even brighter. Finally the demon was surrounded by the very radiance he had tried to destroy. Due to being unable to survive in the presence of such purity his power collapsed and he was defeated. The mountains slowly returned to their original beauty.
This story reveals a deep truth about Maa Mahagauri. Although she appears gentle and peaceful her purity itself is powerful enough to destroy darkness. She does not always need fierce weapons to defeat evil. Sometimes pure light and spiritual clarity are stronger than violence.
