Spiritual Journey from Penance to Purity

The eighth day of the holy festival of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Mother Mahagauri. This form of the goddess is considered a symbol of purity, peace and spiritual transformation. A deep meaning is contained within her name where Maha means great and Gauri means extremely white or radiant. She is worshiped as a goddess whose aura is as pure and cool as the moonlight. According to ancient legends Mother Mahagauri was not always so radiant. There was also a time when her body had turned completely dark due to an extremely difficult and long penance.
After taking birth as the daughter of King Himavan the goddess resolved to obtain Mahadev as her husband. Lord Shiva at that time was a supreme yogi absorbed in deep meditation who was completely detached from worldly life. To please him the goddess started an extremely difficult penance. She gave up the comforts of her father palace and took shelter in the dense mountains to meditate. For years she survived only on fruits and leaves. As time passed she even gave up food and began to survive only on air. Due to this fierce spiritual practice her gentle body became very weak and frail. Dust, mud and the buffets of harsh weather had covered her skin. Being scorched in the fire of penance the color of the fair goddess gradually became dark and rough.
The goddess continued her spiritual practice without stopping with full confidence and firmness. Her selfless devotion even shook the celestial realm. Finally her prayer was successful and Lord Shiva appeared before her. When Mahadev saw the physical condition of the goddess he was overwhelmed seeing her unwavering dedication and inner strength. He decided to accept the goddess as his life partner. But before the completion of that holy marriage Lord Shiva desired to bring the goddess back to her original and divine form.
Lord Shiva took Goddess Parvati to the sacred banks of the River Ganga. As soon as the goddess bathed in the cool waters of that holy river an amazing miracle happened. The dust and darkness accumulated on her body during years of penance disappeared in a moment. The waters of the Ganga made her form so pure that her appearance began to shine like moonlight. From that very moment she began to be called by the name Mother Mahagauri. Her beauty and purity became the greatest evidence of spiritual cleansing.
This story of Mother Mahagauri teaches us a very big truth of life. Her transformation shows that true purity is obtained only through patience and strict discipline. The difficulties endured during the penance instead of weakening her soul increased her mental strength even more. This is why on the eighth day of Navratri devotees take shelter of the mother to remove their accumulated sins and negative energy.
