The Form of Maa Kalaratri and Her Legend

The name of Maa Kalaratri is formed by the combination of two words where Kala means time or death and Ratri means darkness. Together, they signify the Goddess who destroys darkness and ignorance. According to Puranic accounts, when powerful demons like Raktabija created terror in the universe and new demons began to take birth from every drop of their blood, the Goddess assumed this extremely terrifying form. Her color is black like deep darkness, representing the infinite cosmic night.

The Goddess has disheveled hair, which is an indicator of her unlimited power and free nature. She rides a Gardabh, that is, a donkey, which is considered a symbol of humility and patience. The Mother has four arms in which she holds a sword and an iron thorn, while the remaining two hands are in the posture of granting boons and fearlessness to devotees. Flames of fire emerge from her breath, which reduce negative powers to ashes. Although her form appears extremely frightening to look at, she is Shubhankari for her devotees because she always grants auspicious results.

By her grace, an individual breaks the bonds of ignorance and moves toward higher spiritual awareness.
