How Mother's Guidance Changed the Fate of the Universe

On the fifth day of the holy festival of Navratri the worship of Skandamata is prescribed. As the embodiment of affection and motherhood this goddess is the divine mother of Lord Kartikeya who is also known as Skanda. Scriptures depict her in a gentle and compassionate form seated on a lion while holding the young Skanda in her lap. Although this appearance of the mother looks peaceful and nurturing ancient stories reveal that Maa Skandamata played a pivotal role in preparing the great warrior who would later destroy one of the most fearsome demons of the universe. This is the story of the transformation that made a child capable of leading the celestial army.
That was an extremely difficult time for the gods when the demon king Tarakasura had created havoc in heaven and on earth with his powers. Tarakasura had obtained a boon through intense penance that his death would only be possible at the hands of the son of Mahadev Shiva. The gods knew that Lord Kartikeya was born but they still had apprehensions in their minds. The child was still young and on the other hand Tarakasura possessed a massive army of illusory demons. The gods were worried whether this young child would be able to face such a powerful enemy.
Under these difficult circumstances Maa Skandamata raised her son with great care and love. The mother did not just protect him but also provided him with the education of courage and discipline. According to the scriptures Kartikeya possessed immense energy from birth but the task of directing that energy in the right direction was performed by his mother. It was due to the guidance of the mother that extraordinary leadership ability and self confidence developed within the child Skanda. The mother taught him that power should not be used for ego but for the protection of righteousness.
As Kartikeya grew in age his bravery and divine powers began to be discussed. Finally all the gods gathered and decided that the time for war against Tarakasura had arrived. When they witnessed the radiance and indomitable courage of the child they became confident that this was the warrior who would deliver them. In a grand assembly Lord Kartikeya was appointed the Senapati (Commander) of the army of the gods. At that moment all the gods praised Maa Skandamata because they knew that the love and values of the mother had prepared this great protector.
Immediately after being appointed the commander Skanda led the army of the gods and declared war against Tarakasura. This battle was extremely fierce and the demons had utilized their full illusory power. However the illusions of Tarakasura did not work against the courage and strategy of Kartikeya. In the end Skanda killed that sinful demon with his weapons. With the death of Tarakasura peace returned to heaven. The gods once again expressed their gratitude to Maa Skandamata because the warrior who saved the universe was actually the product of a mother’s affection and wisdom.
This story makes it clear that Maa Skandamata is that union of power and compassion that prepares the foundation for great future deeds. She represents the force that shapes intellect and courage.
