What Is Aja Ekadashi and Why Is It Important?

Aja Ekadashi falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. The scriptures describe its significance in detail.
According to the teachings given by Sri Krishna, the fast of Aja Ekadashi, when observed with faith, helps to reduce sins and opens the way for the fulfilment of cherished wishes.

The word Aja carries several meanings including unborn, ancient and beyond ordinary perception. In that sense Aja Ekadashi is seen as a day that can offer an inner new beginning. This fast is especially recommended for those who wish to move beyond the burden of past actions and step into a more conscious and positive phase of life.

How Should One Observe the Aja Ekadashi Fast?

While observing Aja Ekadashi, it is helpful to keep both the outer rules and the inner attitude in harmony.

Preparations on the Previous Day

On the day before Ekadashi, namely Dashami, it is advised to keep food light and sattvic.

  • Heavy and highly spiced food is best avoided.
  • Many traditions suggest going to rest a little earlier at night so that the mind and body remain steady on Ekadashi.

Some devotees also stop eating grains from the evening of Dashami itself so that the fast on Ekadashi becomes purer.

Morning Sankalpa on the Day of Aja Ekadashi

On Monday, 7 September 2026, the fasting person should wake early, bathe and wear clean clothes.

  • Facing east or north, a sankalpa for the fast is taken with folded hands.
  • In this resolve, the devotee offers the whole day to the worship of Lord Vishnu, to remembrance of the divine and to a sattvic way of living.

Those who are able may keep a full fast, either without water or with only water. Many follow a gentler discipline with fruits, milk and light fasting foods.

What Is the Puja Vidhi for Aja Ekadashi?

The heart of Aja Ekadashi is the worship of Lord Vishnu. The outer steps may be simple, yet the inner devotion should be deep.

Worship of Lord Vishnu and Tulsi

After the morning bath, the devotee lights a lamp in front of an image or idol of Lord Vishnu or Sri Krishna.

  • A basic panchopachara or more elaborate worship can be performed.
  • Flowers, sandal paste, rice grains, incense, lamp and naivedya are offered with reverence.

On Aja Ekadashi, Tulsi puja holds special importance. A lamp is lit near a Tulsi plant, water is offered and a few Tulsi leaves are dedicated at the feet of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Vishnu worship is considered incomplete without Tulsi, so her presence on this day is very auspicious.

Mantra Japa and Listening to Vishnu Sahasranama

Throughout Aja Ekadashi, keeping the mind engaged in the remembrance of Vishnu is a central practice.

  • Those who are able may read the Vishnu Sahasranama, the thousand names of Lord Vishnu, at some point during the day.
  • If reading or chanting is not possible, listening to the recitation with a focused mind is also recommended.

A simple and powerful mantra is “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” which can be repeated quietly in the heart to steady the mind.

Food Rules and Fasting Discipline

In general, the following guidelines are observed.

  • The fasting person takes only fruits, milk, water or light fasting preparations according to capacity.
  • Foods considered tamasic or heavy are avoided.

Elderly persons, those who are ill and pregnant women are not advised to observe a very strict fast. For them, light and appropriate food is allowed so that health is protected. Their main focus can remain on prayer, remembrance and listening to the sacred story.

Evening Aarti and Reading of the Aja Ekadashi Katha

In the evening, a second round of worship is often performed.

  • A small lamp is lit and aarti is offered to Lord Vishnu with devotion.
  • It is considered highly meritorious to read or hear the Aja Ekadashi Katha at this time.

After aarti, a small amount of prasad or fruit may be taken, while the inner focus of the fast is maintained until the next morning.

What Is the Sacred Story of Aja Ekadashi?

The main story associated with Aja Ekadashi relates to the life of the truthful King Harishchandra. It illustrates how steadfastness in truth along with the grace of Ekadashi can transform even the hardest situations.

King Harishchandra was famous for his commitment to truth and righteousness. At one point, due to circumstances linked with sage Vishwamitra, he gave away his entire kingdom and wealth in charity. When the sage later demanded further payment in the form of gold coins, the king was unable to provide them immediately. To repay the debt, Harishchandra accepted work at a cremation ground, where his duty was to collect the required fee before allowing any funeral rites.

Time passed and a day came when his own wife arrived at the cremation ground with the body of their son. Overwhelmed with sorrow, she still had no money to pay the fee. Bound by his duty and his word, Harishchandra did not allow the cremation to proceed without payment. In deep pain, his wife tore a piece from her own sari and offered it as the fee for her child’s last rites.

That day happened to be Ekadashi. The entire family remained hungry and spent the day chanting the name of Hari. Even while enduring such severe trials, they did not abandon truth or devotion. Pleased with their unwavering sincerity and the power of the Ekadashi fast, Lord Vishnu granted them relief. The story says that Harishchandra regained his lost kingdom and his son was restored to life. Their suffering came to an end through divine grace.

Because of this story, it is believed that listening to the Aja Ekadashi Katha and observing the fast with faith can help a person move beyond heavy karmic burdens and receive new opportunities.

Benefits of Observing the Aja Ekadashi Vrat

The Aja Ekadashi fast is said to offer several inner benefits.

  • It helps calm and steady the mind, as the day is structured around remembrance of the divine and self discipline.
  • It becomes a step toward releasing guilt and old patterns, making way for a more conscious life.
  • Gentle fasting can give rest to the digestive system and bring a sense of lightness to the body.
  • With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, one may experience support for positive resolutions and for the weakening of obstacles.

In essence, Aja Ekadashi can become a doorway through which devotion and discipline work together to reshape one’s direction.
