Dashami Shradh 2026 Date, Significance & Rituals

As Pitru Paksha enters its final phase, Dashami Shradh emerges as a day where remembrance, completion and responsibility toward the ancestors are felt together. In the year 2026, Dashami Shradh will be observed on Monday, October 5, 2026. On this day, Kutup Muhurat approximately from 11:36 AM to 12:24 PM, Rohina Muhurat approximately from 12:24 PM to 1:12 PM and Aparahna Kaal approximately from 1:12 PM to 3:36 PM are regarded as especially auspicious. This is the period during which tarpan, pinda daan and Brahmin bhojan are considered especially fruitful.

What is Dashami Shradh

Dashami Shradh is one of the important tithi based Parvana Shradh observances of Pitru Paksha. It is performed for those ancestors who departed on Dashami Tithi of any month and any year, whether that was Shukla Paksha Dashami or Krishna Paksha Dashami. On this day, tarpan, pinda offering and food donation are performed with reverence for the ancestors.

In some traditions, it is also called Dasami Shradh. The Sanskrit word dashama, meaning tenth, does not indicate only a number. It also suggests a stage approaching maturity and completion within a sacred sequence. Because of this, Dashami Shradh is regarded as a special turning point within Pitru Paksha.

What is the spiritual indication of Dashami Tithi

The number ten carries the meaning of completion in Indian spiritual thought. It is associated with Dashavatara, meaning the ten incarnations of Vishnu and with the ten directions that symbolize totality of existence. In the context of ancestral rites, this tithi strengthens the feeling that an offering made with devotion reaches its destination in a complete and proper way.

As Pitru Paksha moves toward its closing days, the importance of Dashami Shradh becomes even deeper. By this time, the family has already passed through several Shradh tithis, so Dashami is often experienced as a point where remembrance becomes more serious and more inward.

Date and muhurat of Dashami Shradh 2026

In the year 2026, Pitru Paksha will begin on September 26, 2026 and continue until October 10, 2026. Within this sequence, Dashami Shradh will fall on Monday, October 5, 2026. This day comes after Matru Navami and before Ekadashi Shradh, so it is counted among the final and more spiritually charged days of Pitru Paksha.

The timings can be viewed simply below:

Ritual periodTime
Kutup MuhuratApproximately 11:36 AM to 12:24 PM
Rohina MuhuratApproximately 12:24 PM to 1:12 PM
Aparahna KaalApproximately 1:12 PM to 3:36 PM

Monday is associated with Chandra, meaning the Moon and with Lord Shiva. In Vedic tradition, Chandraloka, meaning the lunar realm, is also linked with the subtle abode of many ancestors. Because of this, Dashami Shradh falling on a Monday is considered especially powerful for ancestral peace and nourishment.

Who should perform Dashami Shradh

The primary responsibility for Dashami Shradh belongs to those families whose paternal or maternal ancestor passed away on Dashami Tithi. This is its principal rule. If the death tithi is known and it is Dashami, then performing Shradh on the Dashami of Pitru Paksha is regarded as scripturally proper.

Beyond this, the Dharmashastra tradition also mentions certain other categories. For example, ancestors who were devoted to Vishnu or Rama, families whose loved one passed away around Vijayadashami, older family members whose exact death tithi is no longer remembered or lineages connected with the Kshatriya tradition, all may find Dashami Shradh especially meaningful.

Because Dashami carries the quality of completion, it is also regarded as helpful for families who wish to remember several forgotten or uncertain ancestors with a broad devotional intention.

How is Dashami Shradh performed

The method of Dashami Shradh follows the accepted tradition of Parvana Shradh. Purity, sacred resolve and proper sequence are especially important in it.

Morning bath and opening worship

The Shradh day begins with purification before sunrise. If the ritual is being performed at a pilgrimage place, the morning bath is regarded as especially beneficial. At Prayagraj, bathing at Triveni Sangam is linked with the purification of both body and mind. After bathing, clean white garments or unstitched cloth are worn. Then a brief worship of the household deity is performed before beginning the Shradh rites.

Sankalpa

The actual beginning of the Shradh takes place with Sankalpa, meaning the sacred declaration of intent. In the sankalpa, the performer states their name, their father’s name, their gotra, the current sacred calendar details and remembers the ancestors for whom the Shradh is being performed. Sankalpa is what transforms a general religious act into a specifically directed spiritual offering for named ancestors.

Tarpan

Tarpan, meaning the ritual water offering, is one of the most important parts of Dashami Shradh. It uses water, black sesame seeds, barley and Kusha grass. Water is slowly offered from the cupped right palm while the names of the ancestors are recited. Usually the sequence covers three generations but in Dashami Shradh the ancestor who departed on Dashami is given special prominence.

Pinda Daan

After tarpan, pindas are prepared. These are usually made from cooked rice, sesame seeds, ghee, honey and sometimes barley flour. Each pinda is carefully formed and offered in the name of the corresponding ancestor. The deeper meaning of pinda daan is that it symbolically provides a body of nourishment for the ancestral soul, through which the subtle energy of the offering may be received.

At a sacred place like Prayagraj, where the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati is revered, the feeling of pinda daan becomes even more profound.

Brahmin Bhojan

In Dashami Shradh, Brahmin bhojan is counted among the essential parts. The sattvic meal does not include onion, garlic or non vegetarian ingredients. The food is served with reverence, humility and a spirit of service. Tradition holds that the Brahmin in this ritual is honoured as a living representative of the ancestors.

After the meal, dakshina and, according to capacity, cloth are respectfully offered.

Kaka Bali, Go Gras and final offerings

At the end of the Shradh, food is offered to the crow, nourishment to the cow and a small portion is placed on the ground for ants. This is seen not merely as an extension of custom but as a symbol of the wider reach of ancestral offering.

Scriptural importance of Dashami Shradh

The Garuda Purana describes tithi based Shradh in detail and counts Dashami among the accepted Parvana Shradh tithis. It conveys the principle that the Shradh performed during Pitru Paksha on the same tithi as the ancestor’s passing reaches them with the greatest clarity and completeness.

The tradition of the Vishnu Purana connects Dashami Tithi with Dashavatara, meaning the ten forms of Vishnu. Because of this, Dashami Shradh is regarded as especially meaningful for families rooted in the Vaishnava tradition. It is believed that Shradh performed on this day becomes especially beneficial through Vishnu’s grace.

The Matsya Purana carries the feeling that when Dashami Shradh is performed at a sacred tirtha, its benefit may not remain limited to one primary ancestor alone but may also extend to other forefathers who were not sufficiently remembered in earlier years. This is one reason why Dashami is regarded as a day of completeness.

What does Dashami Shradh teach us

Dashami Shradh reminds us that a family is not only a collection of the living. It also includes all those who once gave this lineage its culture, protection and identity. When a family offers tarpan in the name of an ancestor who departed on Dashami, it is not only performing a ritual. It is expressing humility toward its own history.

This tithi also teaches that remembrance should not remain incomplete, duty should not be postponed and the worthiness to receive blessing should remain alive. For this reason, Dashami Shradh is not only for the ancestors. It is also a purifying opportunity for the inner life of the living descendants.
