Hariyali Teej is celebrated by women in North Indian states, especially in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. According to Drik Panchang, three famous Teej celebrated by women during Sawan and Bhadrapada months are Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej. Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej and Hartalika Teej are special Teej as these fall during Shravana and Bhadrapada months. Shravana month and Bhadrapada months currently coincide with Varsha Ritu or monsoon period and the timing of these three Teej makes them more special to women folks.

Despite being the daughter of Himalaya, Goddess Parvati performed severe austerities to have Lord Shiva as her husband. She would go to the forest and survive only on belpatra and fruits. According to Drik Panchang, during Hariyali Teej married women visit their parents' home, wear new clothes preferably green Saree and bangles, prepare swings and use it in pair while singing Teej songs. Sindhara is a bucket of gift which is sent to the daughter and her in laws by the parents of married girl. Sindhara contains homemade sweets, Ghewar, Henna, bangles etc. Due to custom of gifting Sindhara to the daughter and her in laws during this Teej, Hariyali Teej is also known as Sindhara Teej.

  1. After morning bath, wear clean clothes.

  4. Offer water to Lord Shiva and the Shiva family.

  5. Offer fresh clothes to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

  7. Offer bel patra, bhang, dhatura, shami flowers, sandalwood paste, akshat and fruits to Lord Shiva.

  8. Recite the Vrat Katha.
