Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 offers complete fasting and water abstinence for one day, granting maximum spiritual merit and inner purification

Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 offers a rare opportunity for devotees who wish to receive the spiritual fruits of all Ekadashi fasts in a single deeply disciplined observance. This vrat is regarded as the most austere among all Ekadashis because the devotee gives up not only food but even water for a full twenty four hours. When Nirjala Ekadashi is followed with sincere faith, correct timing and proper method, this one day can powerfully strengthen the discipline and inner purity of the entire year.
Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the lunar month of Jyeshtha. As this fast is observed without water, careful understanding of the tithi and timing becomes very important. In the year 2026 this observance will fall in the last week of June.
The main dates and timings for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 are as follows
Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 fasting date
Thursday 25 June 2026
Beginning of Ekadashi tithi
Wednesday 24 June 2026

The fast kept within this tithi span is considered correct from the scriptural point of view. In practice the vrat is usually kept from sunrise of the Ekadashi day until the parana on Dwadashi but knowing the tithi boundaries remains important.
Parana time for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026
Parana is always performed on Dwadashi, after sunrise and within the prescribed Dwadashi tithi. For a strict fast such as Nirjala Ekadashi, following the correct parana time becomes particularly essential.

The name Nirjala itself indicates a fast observed without water. This is the Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi and is known as the strictest Ekadashi of the year.
On most Ekadashi fasts, devotees may take water and sometimes fruits or light sattvic food. On Nirjala Ekadashi, however the ideal form of observance is to give up grains, fruits and even water, remaining completely fasting for the entire period until parana on Dwadashi. This is why the vrata is seen as exceptionally demanding yet highly rewarding.
According to traditional understanding
For this reason Nirjala Ekadashi should be approached not only as a difficult fast but as a complete practice of surrender, inner discipline and wholehearted devotion.
The famous story behind Nirjala Ekadashi is connected with Bhima, the mighty Pandava from the Mahabharata. Among the five brothers, Bhima is described as strong, powerful and very fond of food.
Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva were able to observe regular Ekadashi fasts. Bhima, however found it extremely difficult to remain without food even for one full day because of his strong digestive fire. This left him troubled, as he did not wish to miss the meritorious Ekadashi observances followed by his family.
Disturbed by this inner conflict, Bhima went to Sage Ved Vyasa and humbly asked for guidance. He explained that he wished to honour Ekadashi but could not manage to fast twice a month like his brothers.
Sage Ved Vyasa then suggested a special solution. He said that if Bhima could observe just one Ekadashi in the entire year in the strictest way, without food and without water, on the Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, then he would receive the merit of all Ekadashis. This vrat would be Nirjala Ekadashi.
Bhima accepted this instruction. With great effort and devotion, he observed the fast without food or water, spending the day absorbed in remembrance and worship.
From that time onward this Ekadashi came to be known as Bhima Ekadashi and the message was established that even a single observance performed with full determination and devotion can carry immense spiritual power.
Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 is not only about physical austerity. It is a deep practice aimed at cleansing the mind and orienting the heart fully towards the Divine. Its significance can be seen on several levels.
Through Nirjala Ekadashi the devotee demonstrates to the body and mind that life is not centred only around food and physical comfort. The focus shifts towards remembrance of God, inner peace and spiritual clarity. This shift is the true heart of the vrat.
Because Nirjala Ekadashi is very demanding, it is important to recognise clearly who should and who should not attempt the full waterless fast.
Such devotees are advised not to attempt the full waterless fast. Instead they may observe a partial fast with fruits and water or simply focus on devotion, prayer and charity while respecting their physical limits.
For devotees who are physically capable, the traditional guidelines for Nirjala Ekadashi are as follows
The real strength of the vrat does not lie only in denying water but in the quality of devotion and discipline that is cultivated in every moment of the day.
Because this fast can put significant strain on the body, preparation on the previous day makes a real difference.
This simple preparation helps the body adapt to the upcoming fast and helps the mind settle into a mood of discipline and remembrance.
Some devotees also gradually reduce their water intake on the evening of Dashami but such steps should always be taken with honest awareness of personal health.
The way the day begins often shapes the entire experience of the vrat.
During the day one should avoid unnecessary activity, heavy physical work and situations that cause stress or agitation. A calm environment supports the fast and allows the mind to remain focused.
Visiting a temple for darshan during the day or evening, if possible, can deepen the feeling of connection and support the inner resolve.
The devotional heart of Nirjala Ekadashi lies in worship of Lord Vishnu and in sustained remembrance of His presence. The puja vidhi can remain simple yet meaningful.
On this day, the following mantra is especially suitable for repeated japa
Om Namo Narayanaya
The meaning of this mantra is “obeisances to Narayana,” the Lord who supports the entire universe and resides in the heart of every being. Regular repetition steadies the mind and opens the heart to the grace of Vishnu.
Even devotees who prefer simplicity can make the fast deeply effective by focusing mainly on this mantra and on sincere remembrance.
Because Nirjala Ekadashi comes in the heat of summer and involves giving up water oneself, charity related to water and basic needs becomes especially meaningful.
While giving, it is helpful to remember that everything belongs to the Divine and is being offered back. This attitude fills the act of charity with humility and gratitude and makes the entire observance more purifying.
The completion of the fast through proper parana is as important as the observance itself.
It is better not to eat heavily or too quickly immediately after parana, as the body needs time to adjust after the extended fast. Moving gently back towards regular food honours both the vrat and the body.
This careful parana symbolises that Nirjala Ekadashi is not only about one day of endurance but about bringing awareness and balance into every aspect of life.
On which day is Nirjala Ekadashi in 2026 and what are its tithis
Nirjala Ekadashi in 2026 will be observed on Thursday 25 June 2026 as the Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi. The Ekadashi tithi begins on 24 June at 06 12 PM and ends on 25 June at 08 09 PM and the fast is kept primarily on the daytime of 25 June.
When and how should parana be performed for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026
Parana for Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 should be done on Dwadashi, Friday 26 June 2026, between 05 25 AM and 08 13 AM. After offering food and gratitude to Lord Vishnu, the devotee first drinks a little water, then takes fruits or light food to end the fast.
Is Nirjala Ekadashi enough for those who cannot keep every Ekadashi
According to the traditional teaching linked with Bhima and Sage Ved Vyasa, a sincerely observed Nirjala Ekadashi can grant the combined merit of all Ekadashis of the year. For devotees who are unable to fast on every Ekadashi, this single vrat, when done properly, becomes a strong support for spiritual progress.
Can weak or ill persons attempt a full waterless fast on Nirjala Ekadashi
Because this fast is very severe, elderly persons, those with illness or special medical conditions and pregnant women are advised not to attempt a complete waterless fast. They can instead follow a milder fast with water and fruits or focus on japa, reading and charity, participating in the spirit of the Ekadashi without harming their health.
How can Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 be made deeply meaningful on an inner level
Beyond giving up water, a devotee can use this day to work on inner habits. One may resolve to reduce anger, laziness or harsh speech, to set a regular time for Om Namo Narayanaya japa and to commit to monthly charity or service. Approached in this way, Nirjala Ekadashi 2026 becomes not only a single fast but the beginning of a more disciplined and grace filled way of living.
