The churning of the ocean, the Saturn linked Kurma avatar and the deep message of stability in life

There came a moment in the history of creation when the gods and the demons were churning the ocean together in search of amrit, the nectar of immortality. The huge Mandarachal mountain served as the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of serpents, served as the rope. But as soon as the churning began, the mountain started to sink into the bottomless depths of the Kshirasagar, the Ocean of Milk. All their effort was about to go to waste when Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant kachhapa, a tortoise, went down to the ocean floor and held the mountain on his back. This form of the Lord is called the Kurma avatar and the festival observed in his memory is Kurma Dwadashi.
In 2027, Kurma Dwadashi will be observed on Tuesday, 19 January, on Paush Shukla Dwadashi. It is a day for worshipping the second avatar of Lord Vishnu, praying for stability and resolving to practise patience.

Check the exact start time of Dwadashi in your local Panchang.
Kurma Dwadashi is a fast dedicated to the Kurma avatar of Lord Vishnu, observed on the Dwadashi of the waxing fortnight of Paush. The Varaha Purana describes a beautiful tradition of Dwadashi fasts linked to the avatars of Lord Vishnu, in which a different avatar is worshipped on the Shukla Dwadashi of different months. In this sequence, the Shukla Dwadashi of Margashirsha is dedicated to the Matsya avatar, that of Paush to the Kurma avatar and that of Magha to the Varaha avatar.
Note that Kurma Jayanti and Kurma Dwadashi are two different observances. Kurma Jayanti is celebrated on Vaishakha Purnima in memory of the Lord's appearance in Kurma form, while Kurma Dwadashi is a fast of worship to him in the month of Paush.
The Dwadashi tithi itself is very dear to Lord Vishnu. The Ekadashi fast is broken on Dwadashi and the scriptures describe special merit in Vishnu worship and charity on Dwadashi. When the worship of a particular avatar is added to this tithi, its importance grows even more.
The story of the churning of the ocean is told in detail in the Vishnu Purana, the Shrimad Bhagavatam and other Puranas. It is said that the sage Durvasa, pleased, once gave a divine garland to Indra, king of the gods. In his pride, Indra placed the garland on the head of his elephant Airavata and Airavata crushed it underfoot. Angered by this insult, Durvasa cursed that all the splendour of the gods would be destroyed.
Under the curse, Goddess Lakshmi left heaven and went into the Ocean of Milk. The gods lost their strength and the demons defeated them in battle. Then all the gods took refuge in Lord Vishnu. The Lord advised them to churn the Ocean of Milk together with the demons, so that amrit would emerge and the gods, drinking it, would become strong again.
For the churning, the Mandarachal mountain was made the churning rod and Vasuki the rope. The gods stood at Vasuki's tail and the demons at his head. But as soon as the churning began, the heavy mountain began to sink into the ocean, because there was no base beneath it. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant Kurma, a hundred thousand yojanas wide, went down to the ocean floor and lifted Mandarachal on his back. After that the churning continued without obstacle.
In the Dashavatara Stotra of the Gita Govinda, the poet Jayadeva praises this form, saying that the vast earth rests upon the Lord's back and hailing Keshava, the Lord of the world, who took the form of a tortoise.
One by one, 14 jewels emerged from the churning. The list differs slightly across the Puranas but these are generally regarded as the jewels.
| Order | Jewel | Who received it or what happened |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Halahala poison | Lord Shiva drank it and became Neelkantha, the blue throated one |
| 2 | Kamadhenu | Given to the sages |
| 3 | Uchchaihshravas, the horse | Received by Bali, king of the demons |
| 4 | Airavata, the elephant | Received by Indra |
| 5 | Kaustubha gem | Worn by Lord Vishnu |
| 6 | Kalpavriksha, the wish fulfilling tree | Established in heaven |
| 7 | Rambha, the apsara | Went to heaven |
| 8 | Goddess Lakshmi | Chose Lord Vishnu |
| 9 | Varuni | Taken by the demons |
| 10 | The Moon | Worn by Lord Shiva on his head |
| 11 | Sharanga, the bow | Received by Lord Vishnu |
| 12 | Panchajanya, the conch | Received by Lord Vishnu |
| 13 | Dhanvantari | Appeared as the god of Ayurveda |
| 14 | Amrit | Vishnu, as Mohini, gave it to the gods |
The story of the churning of the ocean is not only a tale of gods and demons. It can also be read as the story of the human mind. The mind is the Ocean of Milk, full of both good and bad thoughts. Spiritual practice is the churning. When a person begins the work of self improvement, poison comes out first, that is, old sorrows, anger and negativity come to the surface. Only patience like Shiva's can absorb this poison. After that, jewels slowly appear and at the end comes amrit, the knowledge of the Self.
In this whole churning, the role of Kurma is the most important. Without a stable base beneath, no spiritual practice can last. Kurma is that stable base, the symbol of patience, restraint and unshakeable faith. A tortoise draws its limbs within. The Bhagavad Gita also says that just as a tortoise withdraws its limbs, one who withdraws the senses from their objects has a steady intellect. So Kurma is also a symbol of mastery over the senses and steady wisdom.
| Mantra | Meaning | Purpose | Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Om Kurmaya Namah | Salutations to Lord Kurma | Grace of Lord Kurma, stability and patience | 108 times |
| Om Namo Narayanaya | Salutations to Lord Narayana | Grace of Lord Vishnu and peace of mind | 108 times |
| Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya | Salutations to Lord Vasudeva | Success in all undertakings | 108 times |
Kurma holds special importance in the Indian Vastu tradition. In many places, before a building is constructed, a Kurma shila (tortoise stone) or a silver or copper tortoise is placed in the foundation during the bhoomi pujan (ground worship). The idea behind this is that just as Lord Kurma kept Mandarachal steady, he may also give stability to this building.
The tradition of keeping a metal tortoise at home comes from the same belief. In folk belief it is considered auspicious to place it in the north, since the north is regarded as the direction of wealth and opportunity. Kurma Dwadashi can also be regarded as an auspicious day to place such a symbolic object in the home.
The Srikurmam temple in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh is the principal temple of the Kurma avatar. It is one of the very few temples in India where Lord Vishnu is worshipped in tortoise form.
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra links the avatars of Lord Vishnu with the nine planets. According to this tradition, the Kurma avatar is connected with Saturn. This connection is deeply meaningful. Saturn signifies patience, stability, slow movement, endurance and bearing burdens. The tortoise too is a slow, patient creature that carries a load on its back.
| Avatar | Associated planet |
|---|---|
| Rama | Sun |
| Krishna | Moon |
| Narasimha | Mars |
| Buddha | Mercury |
| Vamana | Jupiter |
| Parashurama | Venus |
| Kurma | Saturn |
| Varaha | Rahu |
| Matsya | Ketu |
In 2027, at the time of Kurma Dwadashi, the Sun is in Capricorn, which is itself the sign of Saturn. So the avatar linked with Saturn is worshipped while the Sun is in Saturn's sign. For those whose horoscope shows Shani's Sade Sati, Dhaiya or Shani Mahadasha, the worship of Lord Kurma can be regarded as a gentle remedy to soften Saturn's harsh influence.
This year the day falls on a Tuesday. Mars signifies energy, courage and land. This meeting of the sharp energy of Mars and the stability of Kurma carries a message of balance, courage with patience and movement with stability. The alignment is especially notable for matters of land, buildings and property, because Mars signifies land and Kurma is the protector of a building's foundation.
On this day the Moon will be in Rohini nakshatra in Taurus, which is why the Jain Rohini Vrat also falls on this day. Taurus is the sign of the Moon's exaltation and Rohini is regarded as the Moon's most beloved nakshatra. A strong Moon keeps the mind steady, which fits perfectly with the spirit of Kurma worship.
| Situation | Remedy |
|---|---|
| Shani's Sade Sati or Dhaiya | Chant "Om Kurmaya Namah" 108 times and donate black sesame |
| Instability or frequent upheaval in life | Place a metal tortoise in the north of the home |
| Disputes over land or buildings | Since it is Tuesday, worship Lord Vishnu and Hanuman ji |
| Lack of patience and excessive anger | Read the story of the churning of the ocean and recite the Dashavatara Stotra |
| Restlessness of mind | Drop dough balls into a pond for tortoises and fish |
Life today runs at great speed. Everyone wants quick success and quick results. At such a time, the Kurma avatar offers a completely different lesson. In the churning of the ocean, Kurma carried the greatest load, yet he remained unseen. He stayed silently in the depths of the ocean so that the churning above could continue and the amrit could emerge.
In life too there are people who silently carry the weight of a family, an institution or a society. Parents who give up their own comfort for their children's future. Teachers who shape generations. Soldiers who stand guard at the border. Kurma Dwadashi is also a day to bow to all such silent foundations.
Kurma also teaches that great goals are reached through patience. The amrit did not emerge in a day. First came the poison, then the jewels one by one and only at the very end the amrit. One who stays steady amid hardship surely receives the amrit in the end.
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Bathe before sunrise and then worship | Do not begin the worship during Rahu Kaal |
| Break the Ekadashi fast at the correct time | Do not break the fast during Hari Vasara |
| Offer Tulsi leaves to the Lord | Do not harm any creature, especially a tortoise |
| Donate grain and clothes | Do not take meat, alcohol or tamasic food |
| Care for the cleanliness of water bodies | Do not throw waste into rivers and ponds |
Kurma Dwadashi reminds us that God does not appear only as power and splendour. He also comes as patience and stability. The tortoise who held a whole mountain on his back is the one who opened the path to amrit. On Tuesday, 19 January 2027, when the Sun will be in the sign of Saturn and the Moon in its beloved nakshatra Rohini, a sincere remembrance of Lord Kurma can steady even the shaking mountains of life. A house whose foundation is faith never sinks.
