Masik Durgashtami January 2027: Date, Vidhi and Mantras

When the Door to Shakti Opens Every Month

Many people believe that the special worship of Mata Durga happens only during Navratri. But in the Sanatan tradition, the opportunity to worship Shakti comes every month. On the Ashtami tithi of the waxing fortnight of every month, Masik Durgashtami is observed, also called Mas Durgashtami. It is a day when a devotee can receive the Mother's blessings through a simple fast and a sincere heart, without any grand arrangement.

The first Masik Durgashtami of 2027 falls on Saturday, 16 January. The day is special also because it is Banada Ashtami, the beginning of Shakambhari Navratri and Mattu Pongal in South India.

What Is Masik Durgashtami?

In the Hindu Panchang, two Ashtamis come every month, one in the waning fortnight and one in the waxing fortnight. The Ashtami of the waxing fortnight is considered special for the worship of Mata Durga. That is why it is called Masik Durgashtami, the monthly Durgashtami. There are 12 such Ashtamis in a year and 13 in a year with an Adhik Maas (extra lunar month).

Among them, the Ashtami of Sharadiya Navratri in the month of Ashwin, called Maha Ashtami, is regarded as the greatest. But in the eyes of the scriptures, every Masik Durgashtami has its own importance. For a devotee who keeps this fast regularly every month, it becomes a continuous spiritual practice. Navratri is a grand festival that comes twice a year, while Masik Durgashtami is a monthly chance to reconnect the mind with Shakti.

During the nine days of Navratri, the eighth form of the Mother, Mahagauri, is worshipped on Ashtami. Mahagauri is a radiant, calm and compassionate form. According to the legend, Mata Parvati performed severe penance to win Lord Shiva and her body turned dark. Pleased, Shiva bathed her with the water of the Ganga and she became fair and radiant. So the day of Ashtami is regarded as a symbol of purification, the fruit of penance and moving from the darkness of life towards light.

Why Is the Durgashtami of Paush Special?

The Durgashtami of January 2027 falls on Paush Shukla Ashtami. The same tithi is celebrated as Banada Ashtami and Shakambhari Navratri begins on this day and runs until Paush Purnima. Goddess Shakambhari is the form of Mata Durga who saved the world during a famine by giving food and vegetation.

In the 11th chapter of the Durga Saptashati, the Goddess herself foretells that when there is no rain on earth for a long time, she will appear as Shatakshi and sustain the world with greens born from her own body and so she will be called Shakambhari. The same chapter also says that because she will slay the demon Durgam, her name Durga will become famous. Thus on the Durgashtami of Paush, both the Durga and Shakambhari forms are worshipped together.

On the same day, cows and bulls will be worshipped in Tamil Nadu on Mattu Pongal. On one side is the Goddess who gives food and on the other are the animals who help grow it. The whole of 16 January 2027 is filled with the spirit of nourishment, gratitude and strength.

What Is the Story of the Appearance of Mata Durga?

The story of the appearance of Mata Durga is told in the Madhyama Charitra (middle episode) of the Durga Saptashati. A demon named Mahishasura performed severe penance and obtained a boon that no man could kill him. Proud of this boon, he defeated the gods and took control of heaven. All the gods, along with Lord Brahma, went to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Hearing the suffering of the gods, the Trinity grew angry and a divine radiance emerged from their faces. Then radiance came forth from the bodies of all the other gods as well. All this radiance merged in one place and took the form of a divine woman. Shiva gave her the trident, Vishnu the discus, Indra the thunderbolt, Varuna the conch, Agni a spear and the Himalaya gave her a lion as her mount. This Goddess fought for 9 days and slew Mahishasura.

The story shows that Durga is not the power of any single god but the combined form of all divine powers. When all the forces of goodness come together, no evil can stand. Worshipping the Mother on Masik Durgashtami is also a symbol of uniting the scattered powers within oneself.

The Structure of the Durga Saptashati

The Durga Saptashati is part of the Markandeya Purana and has 700 verses in 13 chapters. It is divided into three episodes.

Episode Chapters Presiding Goddess Main story
Prathama Charitra (first episode) Chapter 1 Mahakali Slaying of Madhu and Kaitabha
Madhyama Charitra (middle episode) Chapters 2 to 4 Mahalakshmi Slaying of Mahishasura
Uttama Charitra (final episode) Chapters 5 to 13 Mahasaraswati Slaying of Shumbha and Nishumbha

Those who do not have time for the full reading may read only the middle episode or the 11th chapter. There is a tradition of reciting the Kavach, Argala and Kilak before the Saptashati.

  10. Offer kheer, halwa, chana, fruits or a coconut as bhog.
  11. Perform the aarti in the evening and distribute prasad.

Rules of the Fast

  • Keep the fast without water, on fruits only or with one sattvic meal, according to your capacity
  • Avoid grains, onion, garlic and tamasic food
  • Remember the Mother throughout the day and avoid anger
  • Break the fast after the evening worship or after sunrise the next day, according to family tradition
  • If you have health concerns, take fruits instead of keeping a strict fast

Kanya Pujan

Kanya Pujan is not compulsory on Masik Durgashtami but if one is able, it is considered very auspicious. Girls between 2 and 10 years of age are invited home as forms of the Mother. Their feet are washed, a tilak is applied, they are fed and given gifts and their blessings are sought. This tradition teaches that the worship of Shakti is not limited to the temple and that its true form lies in honouring every woman and every girl.

The Astrological Significance of Masik Durgashtami

On the Ashtami of the waxing fortnight, the Moon is half illuminated. This is the point where light begins to win over darkness and keeps growing until the full moon. In astrology the Moon signifies the mind. So spiritual practice on this tithi is believed to help steady the mind, remove fear and strengthen inner resolve.

In January 2027 this Ashtami falls on a Saturday and the Sun is in Capricorn, the sign of Saturn. In some astrological traditions, the nine forms of Navadurga are linked with the nine planets and Mata Kalaratri is associated with Saturn. For those going through Saturn's harsh influence, Sade Sati or Dhaiya, worshipping Mata Durga on this day, especially in her Kalaratri form, can be regarded as bringing peace.

Navadurga form Associated planet (traditional belief)
Shailputri Moon
Brahmacharini Mars
Chandraghanta Venus
Kushmanda Sun
Skandamata Mercury
Katyayani Jupiter
Kalaratri Saturn
Mahagauri Rahu
Siddhidatri Ketu

According to this table, Mahagauri, the presiding Goddess of Ashtami, is linked with Rahu. For those whose horoscope shows confusion, sudden obstacles or mental unrest due to Rahu, worshipping Mahagauri on Ashtami is considered especially helpful. In the astrological tradition, Durga worship is counted among the most effective remedies for calming the afflictions of Rahu and Ketu.

Benefits of the Masik Durgashtami Fast

  • Protection from enemies, fear and negative forces
  • Growth of courage, patience and self confidence
  • Happiness, peace and good fortune in the family
  • Relief from troubles connected with Rahu, Ketu and Saturn
  • Momentum in stalled work
  • Spiritual discipline through regular practice

The greatest benefit of this fast lies in its regularity. A grand worship once a year has its own value but sitting before the Mother on a fixed day every month brings a steadiness to the mind that slowly transforms the whole of life. Just as a pot fills drop by drop, every Masik Durgashtami fills the devotee with a reserve of inner strength.

Dos and Donts

Do Do not
Bathe before sunrise and take the vow Do not begin the worship during Rahu Kaal
Offer red flowers and a chunari to the Mother Do not consume tamasic food or intoxicants
Read the Saptashati or the Chalisa Do not disrespect any woman or girl
Feed young girls and the needy Avoid anger, lies and harsh words
Since it is Saturday, donate grain and black sesame Do not let the lamp go out during the worship

When the Strength Within Awakens

Mata Durga does not only destroy the demons outside. She also ends the demons within, such as fear, laziness, doubt and despair. Masik Durgashtami comes every month to remind the devotee that strength is not somewhere outside but sleeping within, waiting to be awakened through faith and discipline. On 16 January 2027, when Shakambhari Navratri begins and Saturday brings the steadiness of Saturn, a single lamp, a single reading and a single prayer offered with a sincere heart can open the door to the Mother's blessings for the whole year.
