What Is the Spiritual Significance of Pausha Purnima Vrat?

Pausha Purnima Vrat is a fast for purifying the mind, the body and one's karma. On this day, bathing in a holy river, giving charity and worshipping Lord Vishnu are believed to shed sins and increase merit. The Magh bath and Kalpavas begin on this day and Shakambhari Jayanti is also celebrated.

The month of Paush takes its name from Pushya Nakshatra, because on the full moon of this month the Moon is usually in Pushya. Pushya means the one who nourishes. So Pausha Purnima is regarded as a full moon of nourishment, prosperity and grace.

The Pausha Purnima of 2027 brings several holy occasions together.

  • The beginning of the Magh Kalpavas on the banks of the Sangam at Prayagraj
  • The Jayanti of Mata Shakambhari and the conclusion of Shakambhari Navratri
  • Thaipusam, the festival of Lord Murugan in the Tamil tradition
  • The third anniversary of the Ramlala Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya

In the Sanatan tradition, the full Moon is a symbol of completeness. Just as the Moon shines with all its 16 kalas (phases) on this night, the devotee who keeps the fast prays for contentment and fulfilment in life.

What Is the Complete Puja Vidhi of Pausha Purnima Vrat?

In the Pausha Purnima Vrat, a vow is taken after a holy bath in the morning. During the day Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped and the Satyanarayan Katha is held. In the evening, after moonrise, water mixed with milk is offered to the Moon and the fast is broken.

Following the steps in order brings the full merit of the fast.

  1. Wake in Brahma Muhurat and bathe in a holy river or at home in water mixed with Ganga water and a few sesame seeds
  2. Offer arghya to Surya Dev from a copper vessel with water, red flowers and akshat (unbroken rice)
  3. Take the vow of the Purnima fast holding water, akshat and flowers in your hand
  4. Spread a yellow cloth at the place of worship and place pictures of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi
  5. Offer yellow flowers, sandalwood and Tulsi leaves to the Lord and red flowers and lotus to Goddess Lakshmi
  6. Prepare panchamrit and panjiri as prasad and read or listen to the Satyanarayan Katha
  7. Take only fruits through the day and keep chanting "Om Namo Narayanaya" silently
  8. Donate sesame, jaggery, blankets, grain and warm clothes according to your capacity
  9. In the evening, light a ghee lamp at the main door and near the Tulsi plant
  10. After moonrise, offer arghya to Chandra Dev from a silver or copper vessel with milk, water, akshat and white flowers
  11. After the Moon arghya, take prasad and break the fast with a sattvic meal

Those taking the vow of Kalpavas or the Magh bath should begin the practice of bathing before sunrise every day of the month of Magh from this day.

Why Is the Satyanarayan Katha Performed on Purnima?

The Satyanarayan Katha is the worship of Lord Vishnu as Truth itself. Performing it on Purnima is believed to bring happiness, prosperity and devotion to truth into the home. By tradition the katha is linked to the Reva Khand of the Skanda Purana and has 5 chapters.

Satyanarayan means Narayana who is himself the embodiment of truth.

The core message of the katha is that one who follows the truth and keeps a promise made to the Lord never faces want. Characters such as Sadhu the merchant and King Tungadhvaja show that forgetting a vow or disrespecting prasad brings suffering and that grace returns when the mistake is accepted.

Katha Item Significance
Panjiri The main prasad, made of wheat flour, ghee and sugar
Panchamrit A nectar like prasad made of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar
Banana Leaves and Stems For decorating the worship canopy
Tulsi Leaves Essential in every offering to Lord Vishnu
Yellow Flowers Dear to Lord Vishnu
