The history of the Constitution, parade traditions and the Vedic roots of the republic on the 78th Republic Day.

Republic Day 2027 will be celebrated on Tuesday, 26 January. It is India's 78th Republic Day. On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force and India became a sovereign democratic republic. On this day a grand parade is held on Kartavya Path in New Delhi.
Republic Day is the national festival celebrated every year in memory of the Constitution of India coming into force on 26 January 1950 and the country becoming a republic.
A republic is a system of government in which the head of the nation is chosen by the people, not by hereditary succession. Since 26 January 1950, supreme authority in India has rested not with a king or a foreign ruler but with the Constitution and the people. That is why this day is a day of pride for every Indian.

26 January was chosen as Republic Day because on 26 January 1930 the Indian National Congress celebrated the resolve of Purna Swaraj. On that day a pledge of complete independence was taken across the country. To honour this historic date, the Constitution was brought into force on 26 January 1950.
Purna Swaraj means complete independence from British rule, a demand adopted at the Lahore session in December 1929.
The Constitution was ready by 26 November 1949 and the Constituent Assembly adopted it on that day. But its coming into force was held back for about 2 months so that India would become a republic on the 20th anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day. Today 26 November is observed as Constitution Day.

The Constitution of India was prepared by the Constituent Assembly in about 2 years, 11 months and 18 days. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was the chairman of the Drafting Committee, so he is called the chief architect of the Constitution. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the President of the Constituent Assembly and became the country's first President.
The Constituent Assembly was the elected body formed to draft the Constitution of independent India.
The Constitution of India is counted among the longest written constitutions in the world. The original Constitution was handwritten in beautiful calligraphy and artists decorated its pages with illustrations drawn from Indian culture. These illustrations include scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and Indian history.
On Republic Day, the President unfurls the national flag on Kartavya Path in New Delhi, followed by a 21 gun salute and the national anthem. After this, contingents of the three armed forces, tableaux of the states and cultural programmes are presented.
Kartavya Path is the main avenue in New Delhi where the Republic Day parade is held, earlier known as Rajpath.
The main traditions of the Republic Day ceremony are as follows.
There is also a tradition of inviting a foreign head of state as the chief guest each year. The Padma awards are announced on the eve of Republic Day. On 29 January, the Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk formally closes the Republic Day celebrations.
On Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort, pulling it up from the bottom to the top. On Republic Day, the President unfurls the flag, which is already tied at the top and is opened there. Independence Day symbolises the rise of a new nation, while Republic Day symbolises an already free nation adopting its own Constitution.

The tradition of collective decision making and public assemblies in India is very ancient. The Atharvaveda mentions two institutions named Sabha and Samiti, in which members of society made decisions together. Ancient India also had republics such as Vaishali, where governance was carried out collectively.
Sabha and Samiti were Vedic era institutions in which people came together to make decisions about society and governance.
The last hymn of the Rigveda gives a beautiful message of unity and shared thought. It is called the Samjnana Sukta (hymn of harmony).
| Mantra | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Sangachchhadhvam Samvadadhvam Sam Vo Manamsi Janatam | Walk together, speak together and may your minds think in harmony |
| Mata Bhumih Putro Aham Prithivyah | The earth is my mother and I am the child of the earth |
| Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah Sarve Santu Niramayah | May all be happy and may all be free from illness |
The second mantra is from the Bhumi Sukta of the Atharvaveda and is regarded as the oldest declaration of love for the motherland. These mantras show that the spirit of unity, equality and the welfare of all has lived in Indian consciousness for thousands of years.
On 26 January the Sun is in Capricorn, the sign of Saturn. Saturn is regarded as the significator of discipline, duty, justice and the common people. In 2027 Republic Day falls on a Tuesday, the day of Mars, the significator of courage, the army and valour.
In Vedic astrology, Saturn is called the planet of justice and represents the common people. The Constitution too is a symbol of justice and the power of the people. The Sun signifies the state and governance. The Sun placed in Saturn's sign can be seen as a beautiful symbol of governance being subject to the people and to justice.
| Astrological Element | Indication |
|---|---|
| Sun in Capricorn | Discipline, duty and order |
| Saturn | Justice and representation of the people |
| Tuesday | The army, courage and valour |
| Month of Magha | Austerity, resolve and service |
On Republic Day, citizens should respect the national flag, read the Preamble of the Constitution and remember their fundamental duties. Telling children about the Constitution and freedom fighters and resolving to serve society make this festival meaningful.
Republic Day reminds us that India's true strength is its people and its Constitution. "We, the People of India" is not just a phrase but a promise that the power of this country rests in the hands of every citizen.
On 26 January 2027, when the tricolour is unfurled on Kartavya Path, may every Indian resolve to fulfil duties along with rights. The ancient message of the Rigveda, walk together and speak together, remains the soul of this republic even today.
