Vedanta is the stream of Indian philosophy based on the Upanishads, which teaches the oneness of the Self and Brahman.

Why Did the Chicago Speech Become So Famous?

On 11 September 1893, at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda began his speech with the address "Sisters and Brothers of America", which drew a long ovation from the gathering. He placed before the world India's message of tolerance and acceptance of all religions.

In that speech he said that India has always accepted all religions as true. He prayed for an end to fanaticism and religious narrowness. This single speech created a new view of India and Vedanta in the West.

  • Swamiji presented Vedanta in simple and practical language
  • He explained yoga not merely as postures but as a philosophy of life
  • He wrote works on Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Jnana Yoga
  • He awakened self confidence and pride among Indian youth

What Was Swami Vivekananda's Main Message?

Swami Vivekananda's core message was that God dwells in every soul and that serving human beings is the true worship of God. He called on the youth to serve the nation and humanity fearlessly, with self confidence and with a focus on building character.

The motto of the Ramakrishna Mission is "Atmano Mokshartham Jagaddhitaya Cha", meaning for one's own liberation and for the welfare of the world.

Swamiji's most famous call is based on this mantra from the Katha Upanishad.

Mantra Meaning
Uttishthata Jagrata Prapya Varan Nibodhata Arise, awake and gain knowledge by approaching the wise
Atmano Mokshartham Jagaddhitaya Cha For one's own liberation and for the welfare of the world

Shri Ramakrishna taught that one should not show pity to living beings but serve them as Shiva himself. Swami Vivekananda made this idea the foundation of his life and mission. For him, serving the poor, the sick and the uneducated was service to Narayana himself.

How Should Vivekananda Jayanti Be Observed?

On the tithi based Vivekananda Jayanti, flowers are offered before Swamiji's portrait, followed by reading his works, meditation and service to the needy. At the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Mangala Arati, puja, homa, bhajans and Narayan Seva are held on this day.

What Is the Astrological Context of This Day?

Swami Vivekananda was born on Makar Sankranti, at the time the Sun entered Capricorn. The Sun is regarded as the lord of the Saptami tithi. In 2027 the tithi based Jayanti falls on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter, the guru among the planets. The birth anniversary of a great teacher falling on Thursday is a deeply meaningful alignment.

In Vedic astrology the Sun signifies the soul, radiance, leadership and self confidence. Jupiter signifies wisdom, the guru, dharma and education. Both the radiance of the Sun and the wisdom of Jupiter are clearly visible in Swamiji's personality. So spiritual practice on this day can be regarded as auspicious for learning, self confidence and spiritual growth.

Astrological Element Indication
Makar Sankranti at Birth The radiance of the Sun and a new beginning
Saptami Tithi The tithi of the Sun, inner strength
Thursday Wisdom, the guru and dharma
Month of Magha Austerity and spiritual practice
Planet Possible Problem Remedy

What Should and Should Not Be Done on This Day?

On Vivekananda Jayanti, study, meditation, service and a resolve to build character matter most. Insulting anyone, laziness, talk full of despair and displays of fanaticism in the name of religion go against Swamiji's message.

  • Offer flowers before Swamiji's portrait and meditate
  • Be sure to read a chapter from one of his works
  • Inspire young people with his life
  • Serve someone in need, regarding it as the worship of God
  • Do not insult any religion or person
  • Avoid talk filled with despair and low self worth
  • Do not let the day become a mere formality
  • Set aside laziness and do something meaningful
