The fruit of four month restraint, sadhana and awakening

Chaturmas is the period of religious discipline from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. In 2026 Devshayani Ekadashi was observed on Saturday, 25 July and the beginning of Chaturmas was marked on that day. Devutthana Ekadashi is calculated as Friday, 20 November or in some traditions Saturday, 21 November. Local Panchanga confirmation is necessary because of the sunrise and Ekadashi Tithi rules.
The period is associated with the Yoga Nidra of Lord Vishnu. The purpose of Chaturmas is not only to stop weddings and auspicious events. It is a period of four months for disciplining the body, speech, diet, senses and mind.
A vow taken during Chaturmas may be completed through Udyapan on Devutthana Ekadashi, during Tulsi Vivah or according to family tradition. Udyapan means completing the vow respectfully, giving donation and carrying its good discipline into future life.

Tradition says that Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra in the ocean of milk during Chaturmas. He rests on Devshayani Ekadashi and awakens on Devutthana Ekadashi.
The story should be understood symbolically. The Divine is not literally inactive. The period takes the practitioner away from outer celebration and toward inner sadhana. Travel was difficult during the rainy season. Rivers became swollen, health risks increased and agricultural life followed a demanding cycle. For this reason earlier society postponed large weddings and gave priority to discipline.
Devshayani means turning within. Devutthana means awakening again for dharmic action.
Food rules during Chaturmas change according to region and family. Some traditions avoid leafy vegetables in Shravan. Some avoid curd in Bhadrapada. Some avoid milk in Ashwin and certain pulses or heavy food in Kartik.
These should not be treated as strict medical orders. Food should be chosen according to season, constitution and local availability.
| Discipline | Possible feeling |
|---|---|
| Giving up meat and alcohol | Non violence and peace of mind |
| Limited food | Control of senses |
| Fresh food | Digestion and cleanliness |
| One meal | Discipline of desire |
| Fruit based diet | Simplicity and Vrat |
| Seasonal food | Balance with nature |
Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children, elders and people with illness should not take severe dietary rules. Medical need and doctor advice have priority.
Chaturmas includes a vow of speech along with food. Avoiding criticism, falsehood, abusive words, gossip and useless argument is part of practice.
Brahmacharya does not mean renunciation for every person. For a householder it may mean marital maryada, restraint of vision, control of desire and loyalty in relationships.
• Speak truth without harshness
• Do not criticise people in their absence
• Do not send messages or make decisions in anger
• Practise forgiveness within the family
• Do not spread falsehood through social platforms
• Maintain loyalty
• Do not look at another person with wrong intention
• Respect the dignity of the partner
• Balance desire and maryada
• Resolve differences through dialogue
Tradition advises postponing weddings, house warmings, Upanayana, Mundan and major auspicious activities during Chaturmas. The reason is connected with the Yoga Nidra of Vishnu, the rainy season and social convenience.
This restriction does not apply to necessary medical care, education, employment, legal work or emergency situations. Essential responsibilities should not be stopped only because of fear of Muhurat.
| Activity | General Chaturmas tradition |
|---|---|
| Wedding | Generally postponed |
| House warming | Generally postponed |
| Upanayana | According to family tradition |
| New business | Postponed in stricter traditions |
| Medical care | Continue immediately when needed |
| Education | Continue |
| Employment | Continue |
| Worship and fasting | Continue normally |
A practitioner may follow one rule for all four months or take a different discipline each month.
Take the resolve on Devshayani Ekadashi. Begin Vishnu worship, Tulsi service and regular lamp offerings.
Focus on food restraint and purity of speech. Donate once a week.
Add japa, reading and meditation. Work especially on anger and criticism.
Increase Deepdaan, bathing, Vishnu Sahasranama, Tulsi worship and service during Kartik.
Perform Udyapan on Devutthana Ekadashi. Review the vows and continue the good discipline in future life.
Udyapan is not only ending a worship practice. It is a ritual of gratitude and completion toward the vow. If a person avoided onion and garlic, took one meal, observed silence, chanted or followed Brahmacharya for four months the person thanks the Lord on Devutthana.
The following feelings should be included.
• Forgiveness for mistakes during the vow
• Gratitude toward Lord Vishnu
• Donation and service
• Recognition of family support
• Resolve to continue good rules
Do not spend for display during Udyapan. A simple worship performed according to ability is also complete.
Donation is an important part of Udyapan. It carries the fruit of the vow into society. Donation should be selected according to capacity and actual need.
| Donation | Feeling |
|---|---|
| Food | Life and nourishment |
| Yellow lentils | Guru and knowledge |
| Clothes | Respect and protection |
| Blanket | Protection from cold |
| Lamp and oil | Light |
| Book | Learning |
| Medicine | Health |
| Cattle fodder | Service to animals |
| Dakshina | Gratitude and support |
Preserve the dignity of the receiver. Completing Udyapan by giving unusable items is not proper.
Tulsi Vivah is performed after Devutthana Ekadashi in many regions. Tulsi is treated as the bride and Shaligrama as Lord Vishnu in the form of the groom.
Some families perform the marriage on the evening of Ekadashi. Many consider Dwadashi the main day. In 2026 several Panchangas show 21 November as the day for Tulsi Vivah.
Tulsi Vivah symbolises the end of Chaturmas and the auspicious beginning of household life. It is not a definite cure for marriage obstacles but it is a spiritual practice of purity and hope in relationships.
Symbolic relationships may be seen among Shani, Guru, Chandra and Vishnu during Chaturmas. Restraint represents Shani. Knowledge represents Guru. Devotion represents Chandra. Protection represents Vishnu.
| Planet or principle | Chaturmas feeling |
|---|---|
| Guru | Dharma, knowledge and blessing |
| Shani | Discipline, labour and patience |
| Chandra | Vrat, mind and devotion |
| Vishnu | Protection and balance |
| Shukra | Marriage and household gentleness |
| Surya | Resolve and self strength |
A planetary affliction cannot be decided only through a Vrat. Birth chart, planetary periods and transits require integrated consideration.
• Do not keep a waterless fast against health
• Do not turn the Vrat into display
• Do not force strict rules on family members
• Do not allow malnutrition through food restriction
• Do not stop medical care
• Do not stop essential work in the name of wedding restrictions
• Do not give unusable items in donation
• Avoid falsehood, criticism and violence
• Do not turn Udyapan into expensive display
Chaturmas gives a person time to stop and observe. How much control exists over food? How pure is speech? How loyal are relationships? How much time is given to God and service?
The period from Devshayani to Devutthana is a journey from inner sleep to awakening. First the person leaves something. Then inner space is created. Finally the person awakens and returns to dharmic action.
The complete fruit of Chaturmas does not arrive as a magical gift. It appears as a peaceful mind, restrained conduct, clean body, simple life and responsible action.
Chaturmas 2026 began on 25 July with Devshayani Ekadashi and is generally considered to end on Devutthana Ekadashi on 20 November. Some Panchangas may show 21 November because of the sunrise rule for Ekadashi.
Perform Udyapan on the day accepted as Devutthana Ekadashi by the local Panchanga. Do not abandon all restraint immediately after completion. The purpose of Chaturmas is not to remain strict for four months. It is to make the rest of life more dharmic.
When the consciousness of responsibility awakens along with Lord Vishnu the fruit of Chaturmas becomes visible. The Vrat ends but the journey of truth, service, restraint and compassion continues.
