Radha Krishna love through Vrindavan and Braj Parikrama

Kartik month is regarded in the Vaishnava tradition as especially dear to Lord Krishna, Radha Rani, Tulsi and Damodara devotion. The entire Braj region connected with Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, Radha Kund and the Yamuna becomes filled with remembrance of the pastimes of Radha and Krishna during this month.
During Kartik devotees bathe in the morning, light lamps near Tulsi, chant the Divine Name, visit temples, perform Govardhan Parikrama and undertake the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra. The Chaurasi Kos Parikrama is regarded as about 252 kilometres and includes many sacred sites connected with the pastimes of Braj. It may be performed throughout the year but receives special importance in Kartik, Chaitra and Vaishakh. Health, weather and route arrangements should be checked before beginning a long pilgrimage.
The highest love of Kartik practice is not only an emotional experience. It is a path of reducing ego, serving others, chanting the Name, practising restraint and showing compassion toward living beings. Radha Krishna worship teaches that love is not control. Love is surrender.

Braj is not only a geographical region. For the devotee it is the land of remembrance of Krishna childhood, cowherding, Rasa, friendship, parental love and devotion. Every Kund, forest, Ghat and path is believed to be connected with a story or feeling.
Mathura remembers the birth of Krishna. Gokul is connected with the childhood pastimes. Vrindavan is the centre of Radha Krishna love and devotion. Govardhan symbolises nature, cattle and Krishna protection. Barsana is regarded as the land of Radha Rani. Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are seen as highly sacred places of Radha Krishna love and devotion.
| Braj place | Spiritual feeling |
|---|---|
| Mathura | Birth, dharma and incarnation |
| Gokul | Childhood pastimes and parental love |

| Govardhan | Nature, protection and service |
| Barsana | Radha Rani and sweetness |

Along with viewing outer places the pilgrim should observe the inner condition. If the mind remains filled with ego, anger and competition the pilgrimage remains incomplete.
Joint worship of Radha and Krishna represents balance between Shakti and consciousness, love and dharma and devotion and beauty. Krishna is not regarded as complete without Radha and Radha finds direction of love through Krishna.
Radha principle represents surrender, compassion, sweetness and love. Krishna principle represents consciousness, attraction, dharma, compassion and the play of life. Remembering both teaches balance between love and freedom in relationships.
In Radha Krishna worship feeling is more important than the offering. Expensive Prasada is not necessary. Clean water, flowers, Tulsi and Name remembrance may be sufficient.

This routine is not rigid. It may be simplified for children, elders and people with illness.
Braj Chaurasi Kos Parikrama is an extensive pilgrimage around Braj Mandal. The traditional distance is regarded as about 252 kilometres. It includes Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, Radha Kund and many forests, Kunds and sacred sites.
The Parikrama may be completed on foot, by vehicle or in a group. A walking Parikrama takes many days or weeks. Some devotees perform prostration Parikrama. This practice is difficult and should follow the capacity of the body.
The purpose of Parikrama is not to win a distance. It is to leave ego gradually and express gratitude toward Braj Bhoomi.
Kartik is the month of Damodara devotion for Vaishnavas. During this period devotees focus the mind through longer practice, Name japa and Parikrama. The number of pilgrims in Braj increases during Kartik.
Traditions also mention Chaitra and Vaishakh for Chaurasi Kos Yatra. Some groups begin after Vijayadashami. Therefore one period should not be imposed as the compulsory period for all traditions.
Kartik is special because of both weather and devotion. The environment may be more suitable and the Vaishnava practice feeling becomes strong.
Yamuna bathing during Kartik is connected with spiritual purification. Before bathing check the depth, current and water quality. Treating water as sacred also means not polluting it.
• Choose a safe Ghat
• Do not leave children and elders alone
• Stay away from strong current
• Do not put soap, shampoo or oil into the river
• Do not float plastic or worship material
• Wear dry clothes after bathing
• Do not sit in cold air with a wet body
• Follow local administration warnings
If bathing in the river is not possible bathe at home with clean water and remember Yamuna.
Govardhan is connected with Krishna protection of nature and service to cattle. Krishna taught the people of Braj to honour the hill, forest, water and cattle instead of relying only on Indra worship. During Kartik Govardhan Parikrama becomes an important part of Radha Krishna devotion.
Hold the following feelings during Govardhan Parikrama.
• Treat the hill as a living principle of protection
• Do not insult stone and earth
• Give clean fodder and water to cows
• Do not leave waste on the route
• Behave peacefully in temples
• Do not inconvenience local residents through the pilgrimage
Govardhan worship and Radha Krishna worship are not separate. Love also means protection of nature and living beings.

| Donation | Reduce greed |
| Katha | Give meaning to life |
| Yamuna remembrance | Emotional purification |
| Radha Krishna worship | Love and surrender |
Radha Krishna worship during Kartik may be connected symbolically with Chandra, Shukra, Guru and Budha. Chandra is connected with mind and devotion. Shukra represents love, beauty and marriage. Guru represents dharma, knowledge and protection. Budha is joined with music, speech, story and art.
| Planet | Feeling of Braj Sadhana |
|---|---|
| Chandra | Devotion, mind and emotion |
| Shukra | Love, sweetness and beauty |
| Guru | Krishna, dharma and knowledge |
| Budha | Music, speech and story |
| Surya | Inner strength and resolve |
| Shani | Parikrama, labour and patience |
Personal results related to marriage, love or liberation cannot be decided only through Kartik practice. The birth chart, planetary periods, transits and personal karma require consideration.
The lanes, temples and Kunds of Vrindavan remain filled with faith. Crowds and religious events increase during Kartik.
• Check temple timings and entry rules
• Keep valuables safe in crowds

• Maintain Ashram maryada
• Do not leave worship material on roads
• Respect local shopkeepers and residents
Pilgrimage respect is not only bowing at a temple. It is responsible conduct toward the entire region.
Lighting a Tulsi lamp is important along with Radha Krishna worship in Kartik. Tulsi is regarded as beloved of Vishnu. A lamp may be lit near Tulsi while chanting the names of Radha and Krishna.
No. Chaurasi Kos Yatra is long and physically demanding. Pregnant women, elders, young children and people with heart or respiratory illness should choose a shorter Parikrama, temple Darshan or Name japa at home according to ability.
Devotion should not be compared through distance. A person who cannot walk 252 kilometres may perform a short Parikrama of Govardhan, Vrindavan or a local temple. Radha Krishna worship at home, a Tulsi lamp and food donation are also forms of Kartik Sadhana.
Radha Krishna worship frees love from control. A person often becomes bound by expectation, control and fear in relationships. Braj devotion sees love as acceptance, surrender and joy.
A devotee travelling in Braj during Kartik chants the Name through crowds, dust, fatigue and uncertainty. This takes the mind beyond small discomforts. Temple Darshan gives emotional support. Parikrama builds confidence. Satsang makes relationships simpler.

Chaurasi Kos Parikrama is a physical journey of about 252 kilometres but its spiritual path moves within. Every step asks how selfish the love is, how genuine the service is and how simple the devotion remains.
