Prohibited Acts in Kartik Month

Seven rules for food, speech, vision and daily conduct

What Is Prohibited in Kartik? 7 Rules

Seven Cautions in a Month of Restraint

Kartik month is regarded as a sacred period connected with Lord Vishnu, Tulsi, Deepdaan, bathing and self restraint. Many families follow special rules regarding food, speech, vision, personal grooming and daily conduct during this month. Religious belief says that these rules support concentration in sadhana and keep the mind sattvic.

The tradition of avoiding brinjal, tamasic food, meat, onion, garlic, alcohol and intoxicants is found during Kartik. Criticism of others, wrong attention toward another person, anger and abusive words are also considered improper. Some families avoid cutting hair, shaving the beard and cutting nails. These rules are not identical in every region and community.

Religious restrictions should be understood as practices of self restraint and not as fear. It is not a certainty that keeping hair or beard uncut prevents sin and there is no scientific rule that brinjal causes disease for everyone. Health, cleanliness and local tradition should be considered with discernment.

Topic General Kartik tradition
Food Avoid meat, alcohol, onion, garlic and selected regional foods
Vegetables Brinjal, bitter gourd and other items according to family tradition
Speech Distance from criticism, abuse and falsehood
Vision Avoid wrong feeling toward another person
Anger Reduce conflict and violent reaction
Body Hair, beard and nail rules vary by tradition
Conduct Brahmacharya, service, donation and restraint
Health Give priority to medical care and cleanliness
Exception Many traditions allow oil Abhyanga on Narak Chaturdashi

Basic Rules

• Take fresh and sattvic food during Kartik

• Avoid meat, alcohol and intoxicants

• Do not criticise or insult others

• Do not look at another person with wrong intention

• Do not make decisions or quarrel in anger

• Follow hair and nail rules according to family tradition

• Do not abandon cleanliness and health

• Do not harm trees, animals or water sources

First Prohibited Act: Meat

Many Vaishnava and religious traditions give up meat, fish and eggs during Kartik. The religious foundation is non violence, compassion and Vishnu devotion. When a sadhaka bathes, lights lamps and chants the Name the attempt is made to bring compassion toward living beings into food as well.

From the health view meat is not harmful for every person. Clean, balanced and suitable protein can be part of the diet of many people. Yet the meat dishes avoided during Kartik are often heavily fried, spicy, eaten late at night or taken with alcohol. Such food can burden digestion and sleep.

The correct feeling of giving up meat includes the following.

• Compassion toward living beings

• Restraint in food

• A lighter body for sadhana

• Distance from intoxicants and overeating

• Respect for food and nature

If a person needs a special amount of protein for medical reasons pulses, milk, yogurt, paneer or physician recommended alternatives may be used. Dharma does not command that the body become weak.

Second Prohibited Act: Alcohol and Intoxicants

The tradition avoids alcohol, smoking and other intoxicants during Kartik. Intoxicants can disturb the mind, weaken judgement and increase conflict in the family.

Spiritual practice requires memory, awareness and restraint. Intoxicants may affect all three. Giving up alcohol should therefore be understood not only as religious fear but also as an opportunity for health and self control.

A person struggling with addiction should not remain alone in guilt. Support from family, a doctor and a support group is appropriate.

Third Prohibited Act: Onion and Garlic

Many worship, yoga and Vaishnava traditions regard onion and garlic as rajasic or tamasic. Avoiding them helps keep the mind calm for japa, meditation and fasting. Their strong smell and sharp taste are associated with sensory stimulation.

Ayurveda also uses onion and garlic medicinally in some conditions. Therefore it is not correct to describe them as harmful to every person. Giving them up during Kartik may be a sadhana rule and not a medical prohibition.

Balance in Giving Up Onion and Garlic

• Understand the family tradition before adopting the rule

• Consult a doctor when health requires it

• Use fresh spices and clean ingredients

• Do not make the body excessively weak through fasting

• Do not insult another person food practice

Fourth Prohibited Act: Brinjal and Regional Food Rules

The tradition of avoiding brinjal during Kartik is found in many regions. Some folk Ayurvedic explanations connect it with Pitta and digestion. Some families also avoid bitter gourd, carrot, bottle gourd, jackfruit, urad, green gram, lentils, gram and peas.

This food list is not the same in every community. Giving up certain items may be a fasting tradition while other items may be avoided because of local seasonal and digestive experience.

Food item Traditional position
Brinjal Avoided in many families
Bitter gourd Avoided in some regional traditions
Urad Avoided in some fasts
Lentils Avoided in many Kartik and Chaturmas traditions
Gram and peas According to family tradition
Bottle gourd and carrot Regional views differ
Stale food Useful to avoid for almost everyone
Excessively fried food Limit for digestion

When allergy, disease or medicine related food needs exist medical advice should receive priority.

Fifth Prohibited Act: Criticism, Falsehood and Abuse

During Kartik special importance is given to avoiding criticism, falsehood, gossip, humiliation and abusive words. Speech is regarded as a medium of Vishnu devotion. If a person chants a Mantra while insulting others the feeling of sadhana becomes weak.

Criticism damages relationships. Falsehood disturbs the mind. Abuse increases tension at home. Speech restraint during Kartik teaches distance from all three.

Practice of Speech Purity

• Pause before replying

• Do not turn disagreement into humiliation

• Avoid harsh words before family

• Do not spread false claims through social platforms

• Do not criticise people in their absence

• Ask forgiveness after a mistake

• Speak truth with compassion

Restraint in speech supports both mental peace and prosperity in the home.

Sixth Prohibited Act: Wrong Attention Toward Another Person

Kartik includes a tradition of Brahmacharya and control of the senses. Wrong attention, improper attraction, exploitation or mental obsession toward another person is treated as especially improper during this month.

This rule is not based only on religious fear. Treating a person as an object of desire harms dignity, relationships and social trust. Restraint of vision does not mean that a person cannot appreciate beauty. It means respecting the dignity, boundaries and freedom of another person.

Rules for Restraint of Vision

• Respect personal boundaries

• Do not increase closeness without consent

• Avoid improper behaviour in the workplace

• Do not nurture secret attraction while in a relationship

• Do not comment on another person body or appearance

• Direct mental energy toward art, service and sadhana

Brahmacharya during Kartik is responsible use of energy and not suppression.

Seventh Prohibited Act: Anger, Violence and Family Conflict

During Kartik people are advised to avoid anger, quarrel, violence and unnecessary disputes. Bathing, lamp offering and worship are meant to calm the mind. Continuous conflict at home weakens the feeling of religious practice.

Anger may be symbolically connected with unbalanced Mangala, Shani and Rahu principles. In anger a person may use wrong words, take wrong decisions and react violently. Restraint does not mean suppressing a problem. It means resolving it at a suitable time and with calm speech.

Practice for Reducing Anger

• Take deep breaths

• Do not answer immediately

• Drink water and change the place

• Postpone the dispute until the next day

• Choose silence before abusive speech

• Seek family counselling or expert help when needed

• Choose a safe place during violence

Peace at home is itself a form of Lakshmi worship.

Eighth Rule: Hair, Beard and Nails

Some religious traditions avoid cutting hair, shaving the beard and cutting nails during Kartik. This is connected with sadhana, reduced adornment and giving up outer luxury. Some communities treat it as part of Chaturmas discipline.

The rule is not identical in every family and region. When cleanliness, employment, health, infection or personal need requires grooming it cannot be treated as wrong. Treating dirt as religious discipline is not proper.

Balanced View

• Avoid cutting for a long period if family tradition follows it

• Hair and nails may be groomed for cleanliness and work

• Long nails may increase infection risk

• Keep the beard clean

• Consult a doctor during disease or skin problems

• Do not blame others in the name of tradition

Narak Chaturdashi has a special tradition of oil Abhyanga and bathing. Body care cannot be treated as a universal prohibition for every day.

Ninth Prohibited Act: Harm to Trees and Living Beings

Kartik is connected with worship of Tulsi, Peepal, Amla and nature. Cutting trees, harming animals, polluting water sources and neglecting living beings oppose the central feeling of the month.

This rule is religious and environmental. Trees provide air, water, shade, fruit and biodiversity. Animals are part of agriculture, nature and the living system.

Service to Nature

• Plant a tree

• Care for Tulsi and Amla

• Keep water for animals

• Keep plastic away from animals

• Do not throw waste into rivers and ponds

• Do not cut trees without need

• Keep grain and water for birds

Daily Rules of Kartik

Along with prohibited acts a positive routine is necessary.

• Morning bathing

• Tulsi lamp

• Vishnu or Shiva Mantra

• Sattvic food

• Regular sleep

• Light exercise

• Food donation

• Speaking less and speaking gently

• Cleaning the home

• Evening self observation

The purpose of Kartik is not to make life small through fear. It is to make life simple, disciplined and compassionate.

Do All Restrictions Apply to Everyone?

No. Food and conduct rules during Kartik differ according to region, sampradaya, family and health. Giving up onion and garlic may be spiritual discipline for one person. A patient may need certain foods for medical reasons.

Religious rules should be followed with discernment. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, people with diabetes and elders should not impose severe fasting or long food restrictions upon themselves without guidance.

Deeper Philosophy of Kartik Rules

More important than giving up brinjal or another vegetable is giving up overeating. More important than not cutting hair is giving up unclean habits. More important than avoiding criticism is bringing compassion into speech. More important than avoiding wrong vision is understanding the dignity of every person. More important than leaving anger is learning just dialogue.

This is the philosophy of Kartik rules. Outer restraint is a medium for inner improvement. Without inner improvement restrictions become only a list.

From Restraint to Prosperity

The purpose of prohibited acts in Kartik should not be punishment, fear or social control. It should be to make the mind lighter, speech gentler, vision more respectful, food more restrained and conduct more just.

When a person stays away from meat, alcohol, intoxicants, criticism, wrong attention, anger and violence peace increases at home. When cleanliness, service, donation and respect for nature are adopted the feeling of Lakshmi and Vishnu devotion becomes visible.

The true Kartik Vrat is that food becomes pure, vision becomes dignified, speech becomes compassionate and action becomes dharmic.
