Dharma and Ayurveda on meat wine onion garlic

Kartik month is regarded as a period of Vishnu devotion, Deepdaan, bathing and restraint. In 2026 Kartik Purnima is observed on 24 November. Through this month many families give up meat, liquor, eggs, onion, garlic and other tamasic substances. This rule is not only temple maryada. It is also joined with seasonal change, digestion, steadiness of mind and sattvic consciousness.
Ayurveda advises care in food while moving from Sharad toward Hemanta. In some people the difference between cold nights and daytime sun makes digestion feel heavy. In others Pitta related heat, skin trouble and acidity may increase. Therefore reducing tamasic and extremely sharp food is advised in religious texts and Ritucharya both. Yet every body is not the same. Pregnant women, people with illness, elders and those who take regular medicine should speak with a physician before a severe restriction.

Indian food thought sees food through three qualities. Sattvic food is considered to keep the mind calm, the body light and the intellect clear. Rajasic food may increase agitation, haste and restlessness. Tamasic food is said to increase laziness, heaviness, delusion and dullness.
Meat and liquor are generally placed in the tamasic category. Onion and garlic are treated as rajasic tamasic in many yoga and worship traditions because they may make the senses sharp and the mind unstable. This classification is for spiritual practice. Modern nutrition does not divide every food into these three words. Both views should be understood together.
| Quality | Common food indication | Possible effect on mind |
|---|---|---|
| Sattvic | Fruit, milk, ghee, fresh vegetables, green gram | Peace, clarity, devotion |
| Rajasic | Excess spice, very hot, very sour | Agitation, impatience |
| Tamasic | Meat, liquor, stale, heavily fried | Heaviness, laziness, dullness |
Kartik is joined with Lord Vishnu, Tulsi and lamp practice. In sadhana purity of food is regarded as a doorway to purity of mind. The feeling of non violence asks a person to stay away from harm to living beings. Giving up meat and fish therefore becomes a daily practice of compassion.
Liquor loosens judgement. Worship, japa and fasting need judgement. The strong smell and sharp taste of onion and garlic are treated in sadhana traditions as opposed to quiet senses. Many temples do not mix them in Prasada.
Puranic and folk tradition say that a small restraint in Kartik gives great merit. The deeper meaning is that one month of regular restraint can break a habit. A person who treated meat and liquor as compulsory learns to live a month without them. That practice may later become lasting discipline.
In Kartik the influence of rain lessens and the Sharad Hemanta transition continues. Ayurveda may treat this period as sensitive for both Pitta and Vata. If daytime sun is strong Pitta may increase. If nights are cold Vata may become disturbed. Digestion feels heavy in some people and sharp in others.
Heavy meat, excess spice, stale food and liquor may affect the liver, acidity and sleep during this transition. Light sattvic food remains easy to digest for many people. Amla, seasonal vegetables, limited ghee and warm water are mentioned as helpful in some traditions. Views on buttermilk, curd and certain pulses differ by region. It is not proper to force one list on everyone.
In scientific language seasonal change can increase infections, coughs and digestive imbalance. Heavy late meals, alcohol and poor sleep can weaken resistance. A varied plant based diet may offer more fruit, vegetables and fibre. This may support digestion and general health. It is not a miraculous guarantee of immunity. Vaccination, hygiene and medical care remain in their own place.
The religious foundation is non violence and gentleness of mind. The sadhaka feels that worship remains incomplete when life is taken. Kartik bathing and Deepdaan ask for compassion. Giving up meat is the daily form of that compassion.
The health foundation is that some meat dishes are heavily fried, highly spiced and eaten late at night. This may cause acidity, heaviness and poor sleep. Cleanly cooked light vegetarian food feels easier for many people in this season. Those who need a special amount of protein for medical reasons may choose pulses, milk, curd, paneer and options advised by a physician. Dharma does not ask that the body be punished.
Liquor increases tamas. Decision making, control of anger and the sleep cycle may be affected. The liver carries extra load. Kartik sadhana asks for wakefulness and remembrance. Liquor clouds remembrance.
One month without liquor may give some people rest for the liver, better sleep and a clearer mind. Smoking also harms breathing and blood circulation. Along with religious restraint this is a health resolve. Seeking medical help for addiction is discernment and not weakness.
Onion and garlic are also regarded as having medicinal qualities. Ayurveda mentions them in some illnesses. Yet vow and worship traditions ask that they be left during sadhana. The reason is smell, sharp rasa and the belief in rajas tamas effect. The sadhaka wants breath and mind to remain calm.
From a scientific view they contain sulfur compounds. In some people acidity, mouth odour and a burning Pitta like feeling may increase. Harm is not the same for everyone. Giving them up in Kartik is spiritual discipline and not a medical order for every person. If a physician considers them necessary in a disease health should come first.
The list changes by region and sampradaya. Some families leave urad, brinjal, bitter gourd, certain pulses, night curd or very fried food. Sometimes the reason is digestive heaviness and sometimes family custom.
These lists should be adopted by watching family tradition and the response of the body and not by fear. Green gram, bottle gourd, pumpkin, Amla, seasonal fruit and limited milk and ghee remain acceptable in many homes. Avoiding stale food and excess sweets is useful for almost everyone.
| Time | Simple option |
|---|---|
| Morning | Fruit, porridge or milk |
| Afternoon | Roti or rice, green gram, vegetables |
| Evening | Fruit or a light drink |
| Night | Khichdi or easy vegetables |
| Water | Clean warm water |
Eat according to hunger. Eating too little can also increase tamas because the body becomes tired. Balance is the essence of sattvic living.
After tamasic food some people feel heavy, irritable or dull. After sattvic food japa and meditation may feel easier. This is not the same in every person yet yoga tradition rests on this experience.
In Kartik lamps, Tulsi and Name remembrance want the mind to turn inward from outer agitation. Meat, liquor and sharp spice may increase outer agitation. Restraint is therefore a method of concentrating the mind.
This month is also an opportunity to think about violence and waste related to meat. One month of vegetarian food can become a practice of earth, water and compassion. Teaching children respect for food is a lesson that grain is sacred. Insulting another person plate to boast of one own restraint is ego. Sattvic quality is humble.
• Severe fasting in illness without advice
• Commenting on another person food
• Turning restraint into social pressure
• Eating excess processed sweets while calling them sattvic
• Dangerous sudden withdrawal from addiction without medical support
• Forcing a regional forbidden list on everyone
• Claiming that food restraint removes planetary affliction
Giving up tamasic food and meat in Kartik is a doorway of non violence, Vishnu devotion and purity of mind. Ayurveda advises caution with heavy, sharp and stale food during seasonal transition. Modern health thought treats reducing liquor, increasing varied plant foods and improving sleep and digestion as useful.
Restraint becomes meaningful when it comes from understanding and not from fear. If a person leaves meat, liquor, onion and garlic but does not leave anger, untruth and insult then food purity remains incomplete. When the plate is sattvic and conduct is compassionate Kartik food itself becomes a lamp.
Why should meat and liquor be avoided in Kartik month?
From the religious view they are considered tamasic and reduce non violence and judgement. From the health view they may burden digestion, the liver and sleep.
Why are onion and garlic forbidden in Kartik?
Worship and yoga traditions treat them as rajasic tamasic. Strong smell and sharp taste are considered obstacles to peace of mind. If there is a medical need keep health first.
Does giving up tamasic food increase immunity?
Light sattvic food, giving up liquor and good sleep may support general health. This is not a guarantee against disease.
What should be eaten in Kartik month?
Take fresh fruit, seasonal vegetables, green gram, milk, limited ghee, Amla and easy food according to family tradition and digestion.
Is it necessary to give up all pulses and brinjal?
That rule depends on region and family tradition. It is not a compulsory scientific rule. Decide after watching the response of the body.
