Puranic Story of Tripurasura

Different forms of the Tripurasura story are found in Puranic traditions and accounts connected with the Karna Parva of the Mahabharata. According to one famous version Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha and Vidyunmali were the three sons of Tarakasura. They pleased Brahma through severe austerity and obtained a powerful boon.

They received three cities. Together these cities were called Tripura. Because of the boon it became extremely difficult to defeat them. The three asuras used their power not for protection of dharma but to trouble gods, humans and the order of the worlds.

When their oppression increased the gods prayed to Lord Shiva for protection. Shiva fought with a divine chariot and a great weapon. When the three cities came into one alignment at a special moment Shiva destroyed Tripura with a single arrow.

After this Lord Shiva became known as Tripurari and Tripurantaka. The gods lit lamps in joy. The tradition of Deepdaan and Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima is connected with this victory.

Inner Meaning of the Three Cities

Treating Tripurasura only as an outer demon limits the deeper meaning of the story. The three cities may also be seen as symbols of body, mind and ego.
