Memory, Clear Speech and Success in Exams

This time of January and February is extremely important for students preparing for school, college and competitive examinations, because the annual exams are near. Magha is regarded as the month of Maa Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, because Vasant Panchami falls in the bright fortnight of this very month. Tradition holds that Saraswati sadhana practised by students in this month increases their memory, concentration and confidence and reduces the fear of exams.

Magha month and learning share a deep connection. Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the Panchami of the bright fortnight of this month and is regarded as the day of Maa Saraswati's appearance. The Vidyarambh Sanskar of young children is also performed on this day. In this way Magha is the month of both the beginning of knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge.
Maa Saraswati is the goddess of learning, intellect, speech, music and art. In her hands she holds the veena, a book and a rosary and she is seated on a white lotus. Her vehicle is the swan, the symbol of discernment. For students, the worship of Maa Saraswati is not merely a religious act but a practice of respect for knowledge and of concentration.
Every morning, after bathing, light a ghee lamp before a picture of Maa Saraswati. Then chant the mantra Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah 108 times. Aim is the seed mantra of Maa Saraswati. This japa takes 10 to 15 minutes and calms and focuses the mind for study.
In folk tradition, there is a custom of keeping a peacock feather among a student's books. The peacock feather adorns the crown of Lord Shri Krishna and is regarded as a symbol of learning and beauty. It is believed that this helps the mind settle into study. It is a beautiful symbol that reminds the student of their goal every time a book is opened.
On Vasant Panchami, wear yellow clothes and worship Maa Saraswati. Place your books, pens and study materials at her feet. Recite the Saraswati Vandana and the Saraswati Chalisa. Donating books or stationery to a poor student on this day is also regarded as highly auspicious.
Tradition regards Brahma Muhurta, the time before sunrise, as the best time for study. At this time the atmosphere is calm, the mind is fresh and distractions are few. Students who sleep on time and rise early instead of staying up late at night experience greater concentration in study.
Seeking the blessings of parents and teachers before exams and every day when leaving home is a simple yet deep remedy. In astrology Jupiter is regarded as the significator of the guru and respect for the teacher is regarded as the greatest remedy for strengthening Jupiter.
| Remedy | Method | Traditional Fruit |
|---|---|---|
| Lamp and mantra | A ghee lamp and Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah 108 times in the morning | Concentration and peace of mind |
| Peacock feather | A peacock feather among the books | Interest in study |
| Vasant Panchami worship | Yellow clothes, worship of books and the Saraswati Chalisa | Progress in learning |
| Study in Brahma Muhurta | Studying before sunrise | Memory and freshness |
| Blessings of the guru | Blessings of parents and teachers | Confidence and the grace of the guru |
Fear of exams is a common experience among students. Spiritual remedies calm the mind but adopting some practical habits alongside them is just as necessary.
If the fear of exams is very strong, sleep does not come or the mind stays low for long, do not hesitate to talk to parents, teachers or a counsellor. This is not weakness but wisdom.

For students, Magha month is not only a time to prepare for exams but also a chance to awaken reverence for knowledge. When a student lights a lamp before Maa Saraswati in the morning and then studies with full concentration, study itself becomes sadhana. This very sadhana leads towards success.
The grace of Maa Saraswati falls on the one who works hard. The mantra calms the mind, the lamp awakens light within and regular study turns that light into knowledge. For the student who carries all 3 together, an exam becomes not a cause of fear but a chance to show their preparation.
