Every Thursday of the Margashirsha month is considered exceptionally sacred for worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi, the presiding deity of wealth and food grains. In the cultural traditions of India, this holy fast is reverently known as Manebasa Gurubara in the state of Odisha and Agahan Thursday Mahalakshmi Vrat in Maharashtra and central parts of India. On this holy occasion, special preparations begin from the early morning hours to saturate the entire household space with divine energy. According to Vedic beliefs, Goddess Mahalakshmi herself descends to the terrestrial realm and visits households on every Thursday of the Margashirsha month, taking up permanent residence wherever cleanliness, purity and devotion reside.
The traditional lore of Manebasa Gurubara in the folklore of Odisha originates from the ancient Mahalakshmi Purana. According to the sacred story, Goddess Mahalakshmi visits the home of every devotee who maintains a pure and clean heart, transcending all social barriers and caste distinctions. Once, Goddess Lakshmi observed the pristine home of a poor and marginalized woman, entered her dwelling and blessed her with immense prosperity. When Lord Balabhadra, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath, learned of this event, he cited social norms and requested her departure from the Shreemandira complex. As soon as Goddess Mahalakshmi departed from the temple, the entire region of Puri lost its grain and wealth, plunging even the royal palace into deep poverty.
Realizing their grave oversight, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra sought forgiveness from Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Mahalakshmi agreed to return on the condition that no discrimination would ever occur among her devotees and that anyone who worshipped her with devotion on Margashirsha Thursdays would never face food shortages. In Maharashtra as well, housewives recite the Mahalakshmi Vrat Katha with the same spirit for the health and prosperity of their families. This fast stands as a divine celebration highlighting the respect due to women and the essential value of domestic cleanliness.
In Vedic astrology, the month of Margashirsha carries the combined auspicious influence of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Thursday is dedicated to Jupiter, the celestial teacher representing knowledge, fortune and expansion of wealth. When the sacred energy of the Margashirsha month combines with Thursday, it forms an auspicious Lakshmi Narayana alignment. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day removes planetary afflictions associated with Jupiter in a horoscope and strengthens Venus, bringing worldly comforts and harmony.
| Planet / Element | Spiritual Influence | Astrological Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Growth of wisdom, virtue and wealth | Expansion of fortune and success in endeavors |
| Venus | Material opulence and domestic grace | Freedom from household strife and luxury |
| Annapurna Principle | Stability of grain and food reserves | Destruction of poverty and financial crisis |
According to astrological principles, drawing sacred footprints of Goddess Lakshmi using rice paste alpana or jhoti clears negative vibrations from the living space. Worshipping fresh ears of paddy grain ensures that fields and storage granaries remain filled with abundance, preventing shortages of wealth and food throughout the year.
The rituals for this sacred fast begin prior to sunrise on Thursday morning. Women of the household bathe and wear clean attire before painting exquisite alpana or jhoti designs using a wet paste of ground rice from the main entrance leading up to the sanctum. Thereafter, a wooden pedestal is placed at the altar and covered with a red cloth to establish a brass or copper Kalash. The sacred pitcher is filled with water, a coin, durva grass and a betel nut, topped with mango leaves and a coconut. Fresh paddy ears are tied around the neck of the pitcher as symbols of growth and prosperity.
During worship, offerings of turmeric, kumkum, fresh fruits and sweets prepared from jaggery and rice should be presented to Goddess Lakshmi. In many regions of southern and eastern India, the Annapurna aspect of the divine mother is also revered on this day. Donating food and married woman items after the worship is considered immensely rewarding.
